Done Selling On Ebay

His point is that he buys used part/item and need to pay tax on it, when the tax was paid once the item was brand new. 10-15 years ago items sold on eBay and Amazon were not taxable. The same as used items at yard sales. But even brand new items were not taxable.
Now buyer pays:
- item price used/new
- state tax
- shipping

Additionally 10-15% of the item's price the seller pays fees to eBay or Amazon.
Is this different from a pawn shop or thrift store?

It looks it was different in the past. The difference is that is private sale like a yard sale. Pawn or thrift store is business transactions you buy from business. When back in the days eBay was like Craigslist - private sale of used items. Then businesses like ware houses and junk yards started using the online platform and probably then the taxes kicked in.
If it's a used car or motorcycles - tax might be fine. But why would you tax a used motorcycle part (for example) which is sold from person to person (private sale), if that person just try to get rid of staff and it's not a business make profit out of it?

If I had a yard sale in front of my house on a dead end street in Poorville, I might sell some stuff and make $50. If I rented a flea market stall in Yuppieland I could sell the same stuff for $150 but have to give up $25 in rent. Was it worth it? Yes! In fact to defend this exact example look at "thrifters" who go to yard sales etc to get stuff to resell on eBay, because the original owners were too busy/ lazy/ STUBBORN to use the service.

Absolutely true if you are in the business. But casual seller, such as myself currently? Not worth the hassle.

In fact I have gone back in and tried to delete old "shipping policies" I had set up and don't see a way to do that. So yeah I am a bit stubborn. If you know way to correct this hurdle, I'm all ears.

Also does anyone know how to contact ebay on this?

Ebay is supposed to call me - I cancelled the request.

I sell stuff on ebay. Input box size and weight info into the ad, pick what carrier you want to use (FedEx, UPS, USPS) and the system does the rest. Mind you, I'm in the USA, so maybe that matters?

Ebay has exposure to a huge worldwide market. Selling fees are about 15%. What option do we have? Even though I hate ebay's fees, they still get you more money than most other selling venues.
I have the same experience. Shipping is pretty straight forward and you get a substantial discount on FedEx sometimes. I wish there was another alternative but it never happens. Some lesser known or niche things, ebay is the only way to get views. I figure about 20% in fees when selling something.

I check local yard sales and see if there are any standout items I can resell on ebay. Sometimes it's an easy $20-$100, sometimes you're stuck with junk for months. I don't do any big ticket purchases where it really matters.

When there was no state tax on Ebay but there was on Amazon because Amazon had a physical presence in my state, I would buy a lot of stuff on Ebay if I could wait one it, especially more expensive things...but everyone gets screwed on the sales taxes now so I opt for the faster shipping.

Looks like I have purchased 3 things on ebay so far this year. In past years it would have been 100.

I used to sell a few things on ebay. Or Craigslist. I wouldn't even try anymore with either, way too much hassle.

It used to be a true garage sale - regular people selling to each other. Now its seems to be a bunch of scammers. I wonder what the overall volume is compared to a decade ago?
Earlier today I gave away an internally spotless working 10-year-old refrigerator, rather than try to sell the refrigerator for $100 USD. It simply is hard to sell anything today, both from the platform and the buyer.

I have little money, but even less time than money. I don't have time to play games. I am starting to think garage sales, auctions, and flea markets are a better resource than marketplace and Ebay to sell things.

I buy stuff on eBay all the time.
Occasionally sell as well. Fees are high at around 13% but price stuff right and it'll go eventually. Oddball collector stuff that needs a wider market than my local Craigslist gets posted up on eBay and shipped.
