Does anyone here have a 2008 Rabbit?

But how much fun is driving a Camry? He's buying a car for his son - I'm guessing someone in his late teens or early twenties. Plus he wants a manual. Can the V6 Camry be equipped with a manual?

Then buy a V6 Altima. You can buy one with a Manual.

BTW, the Camry SE V6 handles incredibly well, as does the 3.5SE Altima.

Why are you guys even comparing this car to the V6 Altima or V6 Camry? I don't know your pricing in the US, but up here both of those cars are roughly double the price of the Rabbit! So it's a moot point, because anyone looking for a Rabbit is not going to be comparing it to either of those two cars. Totally different league.

FWIW, my boss bought the vehicle this week and went in a completely different direction and bought a 2007 Equinox. It turns out it's not really going to be 100% for his son, even though he used his son's VR6 Jetta as a trade in for the Equinox. His wife will mostly drive the Equinox and his son will mostly drive their 97 Accord. They wanted to get rid of the Jetta badly because it was costing too much in repairs and they needed something that could carry their new Golden Retriever around too. (they could've fit it in the Rabbit because of the hatchback, but they still decided to go bigger and get a small SUV since they've also got a small boat that they haven't been able to tow anywhere for a few years, so now they can)

Patman - from a Honda to a VW? Ouch ... that hurts! Take a few mintues & read some of the horror stories in http://www.myvwlemon.com

I must say that I wouldn't own a VW if GIVEN one for free! SOOOO trouble prone ... life is too short for the type of aggravation this car brand is famous for.

It's loaded with features that normally don't come in a car this low priced, such as a 2.5L 5 cylinder making 170hp, side airbags, 10 speaker stereo with CD, and what impresses me the most is it's available 6 speed Tiptronic automatic! Most cars in it's price range are still using a 4 speed auto, and you really don't see six speed autos in anything but expensive luxury/sport vehicles.

It is true that the Rabbit has a great many features. It's also true that it doesn't get great fuel mileage -- from what I've heard, about 27-28 mpg typically.

VWoA is not really trying to sell very many of these, because they're built in Germany and the dollar/Euro exchange rate means they lose money on every one.

So the resale value is likely to be very high, despite the merely-average fuel economy.

Well, I have two of them. Both pushing 80,000 miles, both great cars. And I am old enough to have owned a more than a few cars from a number of brands (from Ford to BMW). So don't believe everything you read on the Internet.

My mom has a 2001 VW Golf that she bought in the summer of 2004 and it's been trouble free so far. It's got almost 100,000 km on it now. My wife's 2000 Civic has been mostly trouble free, although it has gone through two exhaust manifolds in the last year! First one cost us almost $1000! Luckily the second one was free, our mechanic has a one year warranty on parts and labor!

I was just talking about this very subject with my boss yesterday, that no matter how many horror stories you hear about any particular car, it truly is luck of the draw. People told me not to buy a 98 Corvette, as it is the second year of the redesign and they said it would be more trouble prone. It has been extremely reliable for me! So you just never know.

If I had more money and were in a financial position to buy myself a new car to keep the Corvette out of bad weather, it would definitely be the 08 Rabbit! I don't think there is another car on the market right now in it's price range that offers the level of standard features that this car offers.

One quick question, does VW still specify 5w40 for this engine like they do for the 2.0 in my mom's Golf?

I couldn't agree more. This luck of the draw in my case caused an Audi A4 to be more reliable than a Honda Accord. On the other hand, the BMW is proving to be a sizeable piggy bank.

I believe they spec an oil that meets the VW 502.00 norm, so you're not limited to just 5w-40 as there are other grades that meet this norm (GC 0w30 for example). Strangely enough, some VW dealers in the US are still using bulk mineral 5w30 oil in these 2.0l engines. Wonder if they use the same oil for the newer 2.5l engine.

Other than GC, what choices does a VW owner have if they want a 502.00 oil? Do any of the high mileage oils like Maxlife pass this spec?

Check out this thread. They have lists for US and Canada further down. You are right though that most of these oils are 5w-40 grade, and for some reason GC 0w30 is not even there, even though it does carry the 502.00 spec on the label.
