My boss at work is probably going to be getting a 2008 Rabbit for his son and I can't believe what a fantastic value this car is!

It's loaded with features that normally don't come in a car this low priced, such as a 2.5L 5 cylinder making 170hp, side airbags, 10 speaker stereo with CD, and what impresses me the most is it's available 6 speed Tiptronic automatic! Most cars in it's price range are still using a 4 speed auto, and you really don't see six speed autos in anything but expensive luxury/sport vehicles.

I can't afford one right now but I would love to replace my wife's Honda Civic with one of these! The only thing is, she hates VWs and it would take a lot of convincing to get her to drive one. (she drove my mom's 2001 VW Golf once and she hates it, doesn't like the seating position, doesn't like the suspension feel, doesn't like how it looks, you name it she hates it)

So does anyone here have one, and if so how do you like it so far?

I am interested to hear about this. FOr me the value proposition is a no-go with the gasser so long as a good TDI is in the works. The 2.5 is a guzzler, from what Ive heard.

Your boss isnt doing his son any favors buying an AT equipped car. The boy ought to learn physics and economical driving via utilization of a MT.

My friend has one. Safe and solid. I don't like them, but consider the Jetta one of the best values. My other friend has a Jetta GLI, that's a fat car.

The Jetta diesel wagon is the reason we didnt move on buying a subaru legacy wagon... though they are great cars too. The idea of an MT jetta diesel was too tempting to not consider. I think the Jetta is a decent car that fits me well too... Past ones that friends owned (Jettas and a GTI in fact) were really full of problems and failures, etc., but it seems that has been taken care of an they are quite solid these days.

TDI won't be available until July 2007, as of the latest press release.

The 2.5 IS a guzzler. A 268HP Camry V6 attains equal or better economy while delivering significantly better performance.

As for learning physics and economical driving using an MT, it's of your opinion only that this can only be accomplished by driving a MT.

DSG is an electronically controlled manual transmission that can be driven somewhat like a manual or automatic electronic control. DSG is quite intuitive and likely will give greater MPG in auto mode.

I don't know about the 2.5 but I am getting 26.7 - 26.8 mpg in town on an 07 5-door GTI 2.0T DSG with just 2300 miles on the car. My wife averages 23 mpg in town but drives shorter trips with hers, which is a 3-door. That is with premium gas. Highway mileage has been about 31 mpg on "quick" trips. We had an 06 Jetta TDI(PD)which delivered about 33 mpg in town and 44 on highway, with DSG. Diesel is now higher than premium in this area.

I read somewhere that the new VW CR TDI gets somewhat higher mileage than the PD engines.

Actually he is getting the manual transmission for his son. His son currently has a VR6 Jetta and when he got it he was very disappointed that it wasn't a manual, so he's very happy that he's going to be finally driving one.

My wife drives a 2007 Jetta 2.5l MT. 20k, fully loaded leather heated seats, 17in wheels, stabilty control.

We've had it for over 6 months and 10k, we have nothing but good things to say about it. Safe, extremely well built(in Mexico), 25-28 mpg 30 on long trips.

Also VW says 10k OCI, so we'll see how that works out on the last of my GC stash.

(PS) the 2.5l doesn't come with DSG, only the 2.0T does. These come with a Aisin 6spd auto.

My opinion based upon LOTS of observation. That observation makes it extremely valid, keep your eye out on the road at how many tools mash the go pedal just because they can without thinking about it.

I was referring to the 08 Rabbit which offers only the 2.5L and either manual or DSG (opt).

What is the estimated miles per gallon for a diesel Rabbit with a manual transmission? There are still a few of these old VW Rabbit diesels on the road around here. They look scuffed up, but they are still going.

According to ETKA and VWOA, the 2008 2.5l is still using the 6-speed Tiptronic.

Why is it dumb? I for one would never spend the extra money on a diesel, I'd never make up the difference in cost with the small amount of mileage my wife drives every year. Plus I'd much rather have 170hp than 100, even if the diesel makes a lot of torque. And I'd much rather have an auto than manual myself, I've owned tons of manual transmission cars in my lifetime and just prefer auto now, especially with the horrible traffic we've got here in Toronto (it gets worse and worse every year)

you still see the old pre 84 diesel rabbit with manual trans running around here and there. when is the last time you saw an auto gas rabbit from 84 or earlier?
they almost dont exist anymore!

But how many people care to buy a new car and keep it for over 20 years? Most people trade them in as soon as the warranty is up or a few years after that because they want something nicer, newer, with the latest technology and that new car scent.

Exactly! I'd rather have the car last 15 years but I enjoy driving it that entire time as opposed to lasting 20+ years but I don't enjoy driving it because it makes odd noises and I spend 20 years driving out of my way everytime I want fuel. Diesel cars just aren't my thing, and never will be.
