Does anyone else notice a lack of respect?

I know this board has been losing some of its "upper management" for several years but I'm honestly getting kind of dis-enchanted about some of the recent threads I've been reading.

I'm okay with people who knows little to nothing about lubricants posting, I don't know 0.01% of most of the respected members on here, but I also don't go around spouting things off every chance I can.

The thread I linked to has quite a few newer posters who are not only spouting off things that are flat out incorrect, but are challenging members with industry and other professional experience in a disrespectful way.

Anyone else notice a glut of this recently?

Oh, trust me, this board ain't what it used to be.....

But, things evolve, so you gotta evolve with them....

I first discovered this board 6 or so years ago but didn't even have the confidence to join as a member. What does that tell you?

Usually bill can smell out this kind of garbage posts, must be on vacation,i just unsubscribed from that cow pie thread.

I've noticed this too. Take a 'stroll' through the threads and there are certain members who apparently know everything about everything and are more than happy to offer their advice. You name a topic and by gosh, they know volumes about it!

Not on this forum so much. Ignorance, yes. Tons. But disrespect... I wouldn't really call it a glut. Not yet, anyway.

However, if you meant in real life, then yes, I have noticed it. It seems to be pretty popular among some folks...

There's nothing wrong with learning then spreading the wealth but we need to learn first.

there's always going to be future BITOG'ers needed here..

Well, there was certainly some disrespect in THAT thread. A noob comes on, asks a question, and when he doesn't hear exactly what he wants to hear (and heaven forbid, MolaKule actually gives him a piece of info that he didn't seem to know) he tosses a verbal hand-grenade and runs.

Gladly, that doesn't seem to me to be the norm here at all. Some complain that the moderation is heavy-handed, and I've even felt bad because I reflexively use "quasi-clean" words that would otherwise trip the auto censor, and then the mods fix my post afterward (examples would be spelling "spot" as "sp*t", if "spot" were a censorable word). I do that on other forums because as a form of self-censorship. But I'm getting off track... the point is that although the moderating is aggressive, I think the benefit is huge. This is a good place to be and discuss things intelligently. It lacks the high-school gym locker posturing and verbal punching that so many other web forums take for granted.

That you're way too easily intimidated by a group of mostly-anonymous contributors on an Internet forum?

No, I don't see it. If anything they should take away the date of membership data. People have visited here for years without being a member, and some people are way more experienced and older than quite a few of the young ones on here, who may be older in membership.

I have seen young folks disrespecting older folks on here, but what else is new in the immature land of I am 25 and I know it all.

I have no problem with the same questions coming up over and over, it makes the place alive. I like it. There are always new ideas. Who wants to read old finished threads dead since 2002, not many.

I can understand it when someone has worked hard participating in a thread, then 5 days later someone asks the same question as new. Get over it I say, this is talking to the whole planet, it isn't small groups discussion.

Ironically if someone restarts an old thread, they are chastised.

I'm relatively new here, and it doesn't seem like the friendliest place to me. I've encountered some serious snottiness, and it started affecting the way I post as well, I'm not proud to say--but I've backed away from that. Some of this nonsense is carried out by venerable members, and as with all aspects of life, it's not what is done, it's who does it--and some people get one free pass right after another.

I also think word censorship is ridiculous, given some of the things I've seen. Maybe I'm nuts, but to me, and with only rare exception, words are just words. It's concepts and assertions that have the power to offend, not individual words. And some of the "concepts and assertions" that fly by should raise an eyebrow.

For example, I cannot post the word that denotes excrement that begins with "cr" and ends with "p", but someone else can essentially say that another member's opinion, vehicle, and product choice is worthless. Or, they can imply that a member is nuts or trashy (such as by saying that they belong on Dr. Phil). But as long as I don't post the word c-*-a-p, we're golden.

Whatever.

The biggest problem here (and on many other successful, specialized forums) is that when a new member posts an oh-so-common question that has been thrown around and hashed over and over again, the first reply is usually by a jaded forum member saying something along the lines of 'Search, n00b!', which does nothing for the new member's attitude and susequent responses.

The problem, of course, is that search results usually only come up with other threads asking the same question (with the same unhelpful replies) or threads with endless bickering back and forth with no real answer. The ratio of guessing, hearsay, misinformed opinons, fanboi-ism and just plain incorrect information compared to solid, concrete information is probably about 5:1, which actually isn't bad and is a credit to the many intelligent and experienced people here. Many other sites are a lot worse.

As much as I'm all for people doing their homework first, you can't blame someone for not wanting to wade through all of that when all they should really be able to do is post a question and wait for a non-snarky and simple one or two-sentence answer.

I don't think this is the biggest problem on BITOG. But that's another story...

Not always true, at least on BITOG. Many (if not most) of these threads seem to get real answers, as far as I can tell...

Good call.

Very good call.

Sometimes the search function just doesn't work that well, or you 25 bajillion listings.

Why not instead of "Search n00b", if you know which thread he or she should go to, just post a link to it.

I went off on a different track now that I see the OP point better. OH well, who will read it in a week anyway, and what I said sounded good to me, and who cares anyway, haha.

It is true, I do see sort of disrespect, more of an irate stubborness beyond stubborness, to not listen to what someone else is saying.
It isn't really about new members, it is a personality trait. New members get this done to them also. I have had it done to me, post a link etc etc and someone keeps arguing the same wrong point without ever reading the link and so on. I just walk away, let them win. Maybe this is what the OP refers to.

I have no problems with the same questions coming up again. It gives everyone a chance to share wealth of information. I did not know anything about tribology when I joined. Because of this site I am able to open new doors and I have learned many fold on what I knew at the time. Then I went away for about a year work was way to demanding. The site was transformed into a bunch of moders claming that synthetics was the only way to go if you did not use syn your engine and was toast this was from lawnmowers to Diesel's. I try to share what I have learned over the years and get some of the "old" timers (i.e. the ones that think the only way you can protect a motor is with 70W motor oil) I do not want to offend anyone and I have enjoyed this site for years and will continue to do so. I know there are people with a brand preferance over others. I have no problem with that if someone asks tell them what you use but just state, "because that is what I use" there is no need to trash the other brands because each and every oil you use if you use it as intended they all protect the same. If there is a popular brand on here there is a reason for it, no need to bash it because you do not like it. Also if a "noob" post a question on here no reason to bash him unless thier is a reason for it. The "noobs" on this thread I will give them the benefit of the doubt because one did not have a clue. I hope that he read the referances provided to him, but I do not think he will be back. But we will see and if anyone has questions I will be more than happy to share and teach what I know because if I did not that would be disrespectable to the many who have taught me.
