their car is made of glass.
My wife's car is a 2006 Chrysler Sebring. There are plenty of horror stories I've read on the internet about the engine. The engine has an internal water pump which is unnerving byitself. Plus, with my own experiences and troubles with this car, I feel no matter how diligent I am with maintenance the car will not last longer than the payments. This car is the reason I found this forum. Anyone else feel this way, or am I the only one?

I have a strut about to bust thru the finder well, an intermittent upper end tick, and a brake squeal that I can't get rid of. Add those things to the history of the drive train, makes for some sleepless nights.

I rented an 07 Sebring recently with only a few thousand miles on it. The turn signal stuck sometimes and the starter was starting to go already. Basic stuff to be going on such a new vehicle.

Bedding in the brakes should solve the squeal problem:

The internal water pump is very common with the newer V6 engines.

This I did not know. I thought this wonderful marvel of engineering was exclusive to the Chrysler 2.7L. The pump is supposed to weep externally, but I've heard that's only if your lucky.

Chrysler 2.7 V6. There's your problem right there.

When I was possibly considering a Sebring, I looked only at 4-cyl, 5MT versions. Only found a couple out there.

Well..... the Sebring was a nice looking car for the money. I bought it well equipped as an 06 in early 07 with 23K miles for just under $10,000. Consumer Reports gave raving reviews for the car and emphasized getting the V6. Oh well live and learn.

The water pump (coolant) is not on the outside of the engine block like almost all engines. The pump is actually mounted inside the engine block. If the bushing starts leaking (and they all eventually do), it leaks into the crankcase.

Any timing belt equipped engine I've ever seen is setup that way. The GM Ecotec engines have a water pump that's driven by the timing chain. Basically the housing is cast into the block and only the impeller 'cartridge' is replaceable.

To my knowledge I am not eligible for the lifetime warranty. I am the 2nd owner (3rd if you count the dealership) and I purchased the car before the corporate buyout and warranty was rolled out. I should be less paranoid. Most things that will go wrong with the car I can fix myself, except for the water pump. I'll keep it in the best shape I can for a year or two and then sell or trade it. I bought the car for about 2k under book value, I should break even.

The paint on the front of my Prius is that way. Other than that, the car (including the rest of the paint) feels utterly invincible -- including the traction battery.

Nah, not really. Other than the front bumper, the stuff on my car has held up like bullet-proof armor. Same on the wife's Avalon.
