My wife has a 07 dodge nitro 4x4 with the 3.7L motor, for the second time it is having a check engine light, no shifting (stuck in 1st gear) and weird lights going on and off (the drive selector lights). The dealership replaced a module and a relay of some sort, and problem fixed for 6mos. Now its back! my concern is something upstream causing these parts to fail, or just lots of bad parts. Anyone have an idea as to what it could possibly be?? I need to get a little kick start as to where to look, perhaps someone has experience with this? any suggestions would be appreciated, thanks.

Friend had this problem on his GF's 2002 Neon.
Was a shift solenoid itself, was a pretty easy repair, only cost him the part, an hour or so labour, and some trans fluid.

As for why, not sure. Chrysler's got this reputation for wonky automatic transmissions for a reason apparently. (I had an automatic Chrysler once and it was trouble-free)

Unfortunately ..you bought a late model Chrysler,of which the engineers couldn't design themselves out of a paper bag.Get a very knowledgeable service tech's number and ask him to accept your firstborn.I mean this in a lighthearted way .

Way to go FL Rob, big help for sure.

Not a big deal at all for a real trans shop with diagnostic capabilities. Actually probably an easy/cheap fix.

Could be as simple as trans entering limp mode due to a stupid sensor issue.

And for the doofus's who still prefer to run their mouths about Chryslers, you are only about ten years behind the times.

And of course I meant that in the most lighthearted way!

My guess would be input or output sensor. they are fairly inexpensive and probably easier to change on a Nitro than on my Concorde. If is is the solenoid pack, the job is not all that cheap. The entire valve body needs to be removed to replace the solenoid pack. I did the job on my car and it took me a good 4 hours. It is messy as [censored]. I would bet a mechanic would charge you well north of $500 to do it, more if the whole valve body needs to be replaced.

Best bet is to get your hands on a code reader and post the codes. The LH's allow you to display codes in the odometer without a scanner by turning the ignition key on and off a few times. You might want to check a Nitro forum to see if the same feature exists for your vehicle.

That feature is something all Chryslers have (at least the ones that arent carbureted etc)
Ive used it on an 88, a 2001, and a 2002.

I have to wonder if that vehicle ended up with a Benz transmission, causing more confusion about how it works.

Does the AT pan have 6 hex or torx heads, or several small bolts? 6 hex or torx heads would be found on the Benz transmissions.

Anyway, automatic transmission problems are far too common on Chrysler products.

Dodge Nitro voted one of the worst cars on the road in a couple of articles I read. Transmission problems, below average reliability and very bad fuel economy were common things when I was researching them. Liberty with the 3.7L also voted as unreliable.

update: its the s'noid pack, and the valvebody must come out, as says the dealer, and this is not a covered repair. cost estimate: 950.00, I will research other shops to see if thats about right.

I am sorry to hear that.

I really hope by shopping around maybe you can get a better price. An 07 needing 950 bucks in work is plain wrong.

Too bad you're so far away. I would do that job for you for half that price including parts. Definitely shop around.

FWIW, I paid less than $300 for a rebuilt valve body/solenoid assembly from a local dealer. The solenoid pack by itself should be well under $200. A tube of RTV, a new filter and 8 or so quarts of ATF+4 and you've got everything you need. If you are at all inclined to try this repair yourself, it is not all that hard. Just messy.

When did you buy this vehicle and did you buy it new? I know Chrysler's lifetime powertrain warranty started in '07, but halfway through the year. If the vehicle is under warranty but they are trying to deny that this failure is covered, raise [censored] with Chrysler.

How is this not a covered repair. Are you somehow past the time/mileage for the warranty?

Not on the 3.7L, but my 4.0 Nitro does have a DCX NAG1 transmission.

OP, get a membership on http://www.nitroforumz.com and look through the knowledge base.

Yes what about the so called LT warranty? I'd certainly check that out. OP are you the original owner?
