The Mazda 3 is due for an OC right now and it is under warranty. I dislocated my thumb playing basketball and now I'm going to have to take it to the dealer for an OC (and tire rotation). I just can't grip anything. I have such a big stash too. I just am really not happy about this. I rate this as an existential dilemma of the highest order. Talk me down off the ledge--------

you can still turn a ratchet without a thumb, or use a different hand. Use a oil filter cap wrench to remove the oil filter.

You have two hands you know.

Call Bill, if he's close he'll come change it for you

Wasn't this supposed to happen in 2012??? J/K!

Relax, have a reputable shop take care of it, and RELAX. Recover, take it slow. It's just oil. Get healthy again.

A vacation away from vehicles I've learned is actually quite good.

You beat me to it!

If I was unable to do this type of work, my wife would definitely be doing it... And she'd be cool with it to boot.

Time to buy a new tool... like a cordless impact wrench. Zap that drain plug off!

Is it a stick shift? At least you seem to be able to drive it.

Re-locate it an go about your business.

I am ashamed to admit it but that comment made me chuckle too

Should have installed a Fumoto quick valve!

OK---so I took some advil and got under there and changed it Saturday. The 2010 Mazda 3 has a splash guard that had a hole that is 'right handed' meaning it is open directly below the filter and has some extra space to the right of the filter so a right hander can get a filter wrench in there, or in my case a ratchet. It hurt like a bugger with my thumb but I did it with a ratchet, extension and one of those 3/8 inch drive filter cap things I just happened to have laying around.

The only issue was that I DROPPED THE FILTER JUST AFTER I UNSCREWED IT AND IT LANDED ON THE SPLASH GUARD AND SPILLED ALL OVER IT. I should have used my left hand to unscrew the loosened filter the rest of the way but got lazy and didn't move over. Anyway there are a ton of indents in the slash guard and I spend the next half hour and 3 old towels reaching in the hole and cleaning out all the oil that was sitting in there. Felt like a TOTAL NOOB. I usually remove the splash guard to do the OC, but with the thumb decided to try with it on. Well at least I'm still good with the warranty------------!
