That sludge has been brewing in that engine for a very long time now. Good thing the OP cut open the filter. A few short OCIs with MMO should clean it up, although with that mess I'd probably pull the VCs and do a hand clean up. If the pan is easy to get off I'd probably drop that too. A PCV replacement and the hoses associated with it would be a good idea too. Going forward I'd do 3,000 mile OCIs with that beast. JMO

I found the premium synthetics like you put in clean better than MMO. You may want to go slow with the desludge its so bad. Looks like habitually missing the OCI.

I would do 2000-3000 mile oil changes for awhile.I dont know about using MMO in this case,it might only loosen up more crud and clog up the oil pump screen. It is amazing the abuse engines
can put up with and still operate.

When was the coolant changed if ever?

I'd suggest the coolant is well past it's change date. The coolant isn't dissapating heat as it should. The oil is having to do more of the dissaption of heat. And is sludging up.

thats what happens if you take your car to fast lube places same thing would of happened to my girlfriends mazda 6 if i didnt catch it on time.long story short she went to vavoline twice and they didnt change her filter when i checked her oil 500 miles later it was already starting to get dark..took the filter off and cut it open it looked like it had 6k miles on it

You mean to tell me if I take my car to a quick lube, my car will look like this? That's exactly what you just said. The first 50K miles of my car was done by a quick lube, the cam was so clean you can almost eat off of it.

I will show you in 800 miles. So far it a very very dark brown.

My bet is coolant leak as well.

6000 miles in 9 months = 22 miles a day or 154mi. a week so the 2 mile a day trips would have to be followed by 18 additional miles each day for 7 days a week and that is enough to warm up the oil right? This really scares me though. My GF used to go to Firestone for her oil changes. I always wondered why they were only $11.99
