I switched our car over to PP in April. Had to use 5w30 because I couldn't find PP in a 5w20 in 5 quart jugs. Just in 1 quart bottles which made it too expensive.
I have noticed I need to top up a bit with PP, I never used to with other oil.
Is this normal for PP? Is there some light component in it that evaporates away? It's not leaking.
It's not a big deal, just something I've noticed.
Anyone else had this happen?
2001 Ford Taurus, 3.0 litre Duratec V6.

No, personally I haven't, but others surely have. There is a current thread running about it. PP FAQ or something like that.
I was thinking of moving to PP in a Toyota when it reaches 15k and that issue kind of scared me. Seems that after a few changes the burning stops. Hope it does for you too.

How many miles on the Taurus when you made the switch? What were you using before you made the switch? How much is a bit?

This is not uncommon when switching oil brands and chemistries. Usually after two or three oil changes the consumption will stop.

There is not light component to evaporate away.

Interesting. I am on my second fill of PennzPlat in my Nissan VQ35DE and have actually noticed that my consumption has decreased. I can now run a full OCI without adding any (about 1/2 qt over 5000mi). I previously used M1, GC and others but the PP is best so far for my V6.

At the last OCI, I switched my daily-driver Marauder to PP 5w30. This car currently has 108,000 miles and I am the third owner. It had been using a little over a quart of make-up oil per OCI (5k miles) with MC 5W-20 over the 20,000 miles I've owned the car. Although the fill with PP initially seemed to follow suit, I've noticed recently that consumption has slowed, and the exhaust tips are staying cleaner. I'll report back after the next oil change, due shortly, as to whether this trend continues.

I have been running PP 5W20 in my 2005 Sable with the 3.0 Duratec.I have not had to add any on two 8,000 mile intervals. Have you changed your PCV valve?

I'm at around 700 miles into my first OCI with Pennzoil Platinum in my car and it hasn't consumed anything yet.. strange. I always hear about PP using a little bit of oil on the first OCI but I haven't experienced that yet. My car's never consumed anything, and I switch brands all the time.

There might be a clue on the PP spec sheets, right off the Pennzoil website. Although PP has a great reputation, and the UOAs would seem to support that (as would the opinion of a couple notable experts in the field), it's Noack volatility numbers seem a tad high (12-13% in all but the 50 wt grades).* I would theorize that if the subject engine has areas inside in which the oil is subjected to sufficiently hot conditions, that might lead to excessive evaporation losses. Just my theory, of course.

* By contrast, top tier synthetics usually boast Noack numbers well below 10%, and a couple of the Amsoil products claim figures as low as 6%, IIRC.

My PP (5w30) got smaller too this past weekend. Drove through California (hot) up to the mountains (dry, not so hot). Got up there and the dipstick read about a quart low.

1) Does the climate have anything to do with my shrinking PP?

2) I've used Mobil 1 and Valvoline Syn before, but I don't think I had this much loss. Is it just PP? Or just the viscosity I used?

3) Would the fact that I ascended a number of thousands of feet have anything to do with my PP shrinkage? Coming down the hill wouldn't have affected my PP as much I don't think....

All jokes aside, I am serious about the questions.

Thanks!

Seem to recall seeing PP 10w-30 has NOACK lower than 10.

The 5w30 is 11.6 and the 10W-30 is 9.9 according to the data sheet on the pennzoil site.

I'm wondering if there's another version of this spec (presumably older) floating around somewhere. I thought I'd seen on where they were all above 10. Or maybe not...

There are countless BITOGrs who run dino for 5-7k and state "doesn't burn a drop". And these dinos have relatively high NOACKs as well. I brought this up some time ago, and folks seemed to agree that NOACK doesn't correlate with real world consumption.

Must be a Ford thing....
I've got a '94 4.0 Aerostar that probably gets a different type of oil every oil change. I got a good price on PP and tried it once. It used about a quart every 1500 miles. At the time it had about 90K on it. It currently has about 130K on it. Never used any oil before, never has since. I've used both synthetic and dino oil since.

Just one of those things, I guess. I don't really worry about it.
