On another forum, car related, there was an dino/syn oil debate brewing. One of the gents posted this statement:
quote:

"And there are other advantages to conventional oil other than cost. Mainly it has the ability to stay on engine parts better when the engine is shut down, this is why some experts recommend using conventional oil before long term storage."

Humor the newbie (me

), any truth to this?

Doesn't make sense at all. Most (all?) synthetics have at least some ester content. Esters have a "polar" electrostatic attraction for metal oxides* which would aid having some lube available at startup after a long snooze.

*All metals, no matter how finely finished, have at a minimum, a one or two molecule thick oxide layer at the surface.

If you would like to see what Castrol GPS 10W-40 does when it sits then Look Here Yes Castrol GPS 10W-40 is a Motorcycle oil but it give you a picture and drive's the point home.

Actually, whether the storage oil choice is synthetic or conventional dino, it's the additives that are the workhorse for preventing rust/corrosion.

And it's not just exposure to humidity, it's the acidic components in the oil due to incomplete combustion from start-up conditions and short trips.

The actual engine rust test for ILSAC & API certification tests the resistance of the oil to an acid solution metered into the oil during an engine test run. It is not the ASTM D1748 humidity cabinet test per the Amsoil link in the above thread.

As far as oil film retention, Castrol addressed this characteristic with the Castrol Start-Up brand that utilizes the "cling" factor of ester base oils. However, Start-Up has not generated any performance gains for the UOA's posted in the Bitog forum.

If either synthetic or conventional/dino base oils demonstrated a superior film retention property, you can bet your next oil change the fact would be marketed until we were all sick of hearing about it!

Thanks, guys.

I'm going to guess that the statement is a distortion of the advice to change oil as preventive maintance before storage, which makes sense.
