Difference between Pennzoil Synthetic and PP?

I was browsing the clearance racks in the automotive section of my local KMart tonight and noticed that there were about 30 quarts of Pennzoil Synthetic motor oil marked to five dollars a quart.

However, they had bottles of Pennzoil Platinum on the shelves selling for around 7 dollars a quart.

The "Non-platinum" jugs were very dusty and I couldn't find a date stamp on the container.

Is this stuff worth the 5 dollars? What's the difference?

If they were dusty than that should tell you something, would you buy fruit from a supermarket that had dust on it.

I don't lubricate my engine with raw fruit.

I was wondering the same thing. I did an oil change for someone years ago with the aformentioned Pennzoil Syn. and I distinctly remember the bottles with the handle. I would say "Platinum" is just a new naming. Surely the formulation has changed, but I doubt the two products were ever manufactured and sold concurrently.

It is older 'SL' Pennzoil synthetic. It is a high-quality, group III synthetic. If you go back far enough back into the UOA's, there are a couple of reports on it, and they weren't bad.

I'd pay $5/quart for it.

Why pay $5 a quart when you can get current Pennzoil Platinum for $1 a quart!

Kmart rarely has any deals to move product in their auto and tools sections. I'd be happy to buy dusty bottles if the pricing was competitive, or an item that's no longer found as in this case.

Platinum came to market as an EOP basestock which was scaled up from a pilot operation. I believe that it had seal compatibility and additive solubility issues that proved complicated. Ultimately, it disappeared as fast as it came to market. The name was retained. This is how I recall the events, anyway. EOP promised to give PAO a run for the money with about a 30% margin on costs. It was supposed to be the M1 killer in competitive pricing.

I saw a few different looking bottles of Penz Syn w/ Pennzane at K-Mart yesterday. It was old/dusty and also was SL(pre'04)

Sounds like K-Mart is more of an oil museum than an oil retailer. They should make an "Oils of Yesteryear" sign and charge $0.50 a head to tour the display.

The same bottles are sold for 3.50 at KMart clearance in my area, quart bottles with a handle. How would they compare to today's Platinum? Can they be any better?

I realize this is an old thread, but still...
