If Ford or Chevy offered the Cummins engine with an Allison transmission as an option, would you pick it over the standard setup.

Ford Truck + Cummins Engine + Allison Transmission = Best truck on the market, bar none.

I recently purchased an '06 Dodge Ram w/the CTD and man is it a great engine. I drove a 6.0 PSD before purchasing the Dodge.

Allegedly, Allison offered their new automatic to Dodge for their Cummins-powered pickups. They declined as they probably felt their existing automatic was plenty good. So much for that . . .

Seems like Cummins shopped their earlier diesels to Ford and GM, back when, and only Dodge bit for it. The rest is history.

Enjoy!

Cummings! The problem with Dodge is that the truck will fall apart around it. Or...you could always get a F650 with the 8.4L Cat diesel

Isnt Allison a GM company??? I know we have an allison urbine ued for bleed air to start our big (25MW) turbine for ship testing... it is Allison and GM labeled.

I read that Allison Turbine was purchased by Rolls-Royce, not the car, but aero division. I'll try to find out exactly and post it.
The Powertrain division may still be GM.

We have a 03 Ford F650 with a 5.9 cummins and allison auto trans. Over 200000 miles on it. Problems with it has been it is on its third vp44 injection pump and multiple fuel injection line breakages which put diesel fuel into the engine wiring harnesses and made them into self peeling wires which would short out. Both wiring harnesses replaced in the last 2 months. Now using amsoil fuel additive to help extend the life of the pump. Engine and trans are tough the fuel system is another story.

I'm still trying to figure out why no pickup makers have teamed up with Cat. The Cat badge alone would sell trucks to folks who want the name.

Funny you should say that, as the late '99 Ford PSD I had previous to my Cummins equipped Dodge did exactly what you are stating. Everything fell apart in the truck except the motor. I have had exactly zero problems with the Dodge in almost 3 years now, and almost all of its miles are pulling a trailer, sometimes above what it is recommended to pull, for farm use. Have had many Chevy trucks, and they were very reliable IMO, outside of Dexcool related problems. Have been very happy with the Dodge.

A) Cat has never pushed hard for the light truck market, they tend to be fairly pricey as well, although very good.

B) Big 3 tend to team up with existing partners/subsidiaries to produce engines to save $$$

C) I do not believe CAT has a particular model that suits light truck design at the time, and it would cost a small fortune for any interested party to get the ball rolling for such a project. I would love to see a CAT equipped Ford!

D. CAT does NOT take kindly to their warranty engine packages being manipulated/stroked and poked....no mods allows...no tuners...no aftermarket gadgets or boytoy engine mods...
or Warranty is Null and VOID

they build HD truck, commercial and industrial engines, not toys

they would lose warranty control if they allowed PU manuf.s to play with their engines and suffer from the bad publicity

they can't keep up with engine build demand now for their existing customers and they set the price

I can't disagree with them there. I imagine it would be very frustrating to be an engineer that looks at major engine failures on the pick-up diesels, knowing that a large percentage are due to modifications but with no way to prove it.

I second that. I was very happy with my silverado until I brought a RAM.
