You ONLY report what you legally have to report.
A friend of mine does tax returns as part of his charity work. The people are not poor that he works with. They are clueless. A lot of widows that have never dealt with financial aspects of their life. They often have six-figure incomes in retirement and have annual notes about the $22 they won at bingo that they make him include as part of their income so the IRS doesn't put them in jail.
 
Talk to folks that have fudged their taxes with the IRS and get caught. Then report back.
 
I'm not rich enough to beat the taxman. Once there was a discrepancy; I believed I was right. I nearly had to appear in court in Sacramento. Then they caved.
 
I was subjected to hour after hour of scrutiny by WA DOR.

They didn’t find what they were looking for. They did find a couple items I should have paid use tax. I paid the $7
guilty until proven innocent: the IRS motto :D
