Not everyone who quits gains weight, I didn't. I've been 6'2" 160something before I quit.

Swisher sweet here. I did, however, inhale. But what I learned was getting off the cigars was easy. Getting off cigs was a whole nother story. I thought at first it was just in my head. Then I learned about all the junk they put in smokes to keep you addicted. The swisher, didn't seem to have those because the cravings were much less an issue even considering the smoke was heavier. Worked for me, been a year over and haven't had a relapse or even much of a craving after the first 24.

I’ve never smoked but my sister did. She quit after visiting a friend in the hospital. Seeing recovering cancer patients roaming the halls was all it took. Oxygen, IVs, stoma holes and electric voice assists cracked her crust but good. Stopped cold turkey and if any cravings hit she just reflected on her visit.

Plus she didn’t want to fit the description that Obi Wan Kenobi used to describe Luke Skywalkers father - “ he’s more machine now than man.....”

Chewed Nicorette gum for 2-3 months after quitting. To me, that’s the best solution to the cravings because it’s something you do with your mouth, which is a big part of the smoking addiction. And it knocks the edge off the cravings.

After 8-10 weeks, switch to Wrigley’s.

It works.

I quite 15 years ago. Took a class at the ALA, then quit drinking during the first few months. It takes about a month to get past the physical cravings....then its just mental. QUIT DRINKING for at least a month. I also like the way this guy did it, with the gum. Just don't chew the gum for a decade like my friend.

Quite the opposite. I actually tried to start because smoking has shown to have clinical effects on a health condition I suffer from. The nicotine is part of it, but you can't just use patches or gum.. it has to be smoked.

Unfortunately I just don't like the smell or taste of smoke.. couldn't do it.

I decided to quit smoking after meeting my wife, i was done with sowing my wild oats and all that. I only smoked maybe 2 packs a week. Both my grandfathers died of cancer so i knew my chances werent good if i didnt quit. It sounds corny but i read alan carr’s book “the easy way to stop smoking” and that seemed to help me with the mental aspect of tobacco addiction.

He advocates not to use patches or nicorette so maybe he’s right up your alley.

I quit in 2005 after 10 years of smoking. I used Smoke away, an herbal supplement. I had tried the patch, gum and prescriptions at the time. It worked cold turkey. Maybe I was mentally ready or some kind of placebo effect, but it was so much easier than the previous attempts. I feel so much better now. Still smells good to me, but tastes like garbage now. It got to be too much money too, it was a $1 a pack when I started and was closing in on $4 when I quit.

+1 . best advice right there. I'm on Toprol for my heart. I only smoked if I was drinking Sapporo on Friday nights. Ended up smoking like 6 every Friday night but always throw pack away next morning. Quit drinking and smoking cold turkey. A week on benzodiazepines and I was good. Just visit our vets at VA hospital. Still see them smoking but I remember we owe it to them to live a healthy life because they stood to fight for us so we could. Make a pack last a week. Then two weeks. Coffee and beer will make quitting harder too. Everyday you don't smoke is a success.

I quit cold turkey after smoking for a couple years after high school. Started occasional Cigars after I quit drinking 20 years ago. Now I probably average about 5 hand rolled cigars a week, they don't have a lot of the chemicals put in cigarettes and I can go without with no cravings. If I get cancer it will be from 40 years working in Diesel garages not smoking.

The most important thing needed to quit smoking is determination. I saw the light one particular day for some odd reason and went cold turkey. I was absolutely determined to prove to myself that I could do it. That was over ten years ago, after being a smoker for a long time. Have not touched a smoke since that day.

You obviously have no idea how smoking was viewed just 30 years ago. In 1984 EVERYONE smoked.....LOL.
Not everyone and certainly not a majority. With that said, both my parents smoked, my Dad was at about 4 or 5 packs a day before he quit. He quit cold turkey in 1988 after smoking for more than 30 years with no assistance after my mother's doctor told him he looked like a gray man because his skin color was ashen from the CO levels in his blood.

It did not save him though, complications from COPD and heart disease ended his life at 74 in 2013.

OP - my philosophy is there are enough things in this world to take you out of the picture without one helping it along by smoking.

Find a way to quit.

First child on the way in 73. Quit cold turkey at that time.

I read this book also. I quit 10+ years ago after having smoked for 4-ish years.

I found that coinciding my quitting smoking with a change in my routine helped the most.

I have a binge type addictive streak in me..smoked at around 11yrs old ..sensed even then how it affected my psyche..managed to quit that with bouts every now and again..had problems with alcohol early twenties..amphetamines ,hash (extreme bongs ,joints) and anabolic steroids up until my mid 30s..phew..now i rarely drink alcohol..avoid all drugs and try to fill the void with diy mechanicals ..dog walking..and raising my son..

To answer the question on how did I quit smoking. I tried the gum, the patch, and chantex and nothing worked UNTIL I said NO to myself every time I wanted a smoke. Takes about 72 hours to get the Nicotine out of your system and 21 days to fully break the habit. One cigarette will re-addict you, so abstinence is the only way. Ed
