I went to walmart today to get a fram X2 XG3600 oil filter and i noticed that there are not many X2 filters on the shelf. Also i was at pep boys not too long ago and they don't even have the X2 filters any more the only frams they have now are the dreaded orange cans of doom. What is going on here? Is fram disconinuing the X2 series or what?

Still see the X2 everywhere online. I guess that if it isn't selling, then its up to the store to decide whether to waste shelf space or use that space for other products.

I read on a post that these filters have a design similar to the Hard Driver oil filters. Is this true?

What do you guys pay for a X2 filter down there?

Canadian Tire sells them for $9.99 canadian here.

Are you sure about that? I am pretty sure I've seen them selling for closer to $13.99 or even $14.99 at CT stores around here.

Looks like Fram has changed the name of the X2 to "Synthetic Oil Filter". At least that's what's happened in Canada.

Definitely a Group III synthetic.

Synthetic oil filter huh! I have not seen any here in the us but maybe that is what fram is going to do here also. I will keep an eye out for them. If i find one i will get it and cut it open and see if it is as good as the X2 or not!

Old>>>>New
X2=Extended Guard=XG
Extra Guard=WearGuard

Tough Guard=Hard Driver and Double Guard extinct?

I am located in Guelph Ontario, and both Guelph stores recently started getting stock of these filters. They don't call them X2 filters like I see at walmart (which are priced at the price you mention), they call them Fram synthetic filters. Open the box and it says extended guard filters. The box rates them for 11,000 miles, which is different from the website which says 7,000 miles for the X2.

Correction to dcormann's quote above.
7000 miles was changed on the box, to 11,000 kms for the metric Canucks.
X2=XG ,Fram just chopped the X2 moniker and left XG. Same silicone ADBV , same media backed by a wire mesh, same filter! You can cut one up to find out for sure. I guessed they scared too many customers away at 15$ ,so they dropped the price to 10 loonie$.

If you are jonesing to spend 10 bucks on a filter there are a lot of other options out there.

Are you 100% sure that the X2 has just been renamed the XG?

I clearly remember FRAM selling a XG (extra guard) filter that was priced below the $10 (US) that the X2 was selling for.

I used to use the 3600 size X2 filter, and found that often Walmart was sold out of them.....

That is a very popular size filter. So that may be your problem, they sell a lot of them as many other stores that sell FRAM do not carry the more expensive X2.

My own opinion (and I am no authority) is that a lot of bad press for FRAM comes from the $2.49 low end filter that they sell.
I use a different brand now, but with a regular oil change interval with quality oil, your car is not going to fail because of the X2 FRAM.

The new fram X2 filters i have been seeing lately at walmart are not called X2 extended guard they are just called extended guard and they are not in a can anymore they are in a box sealed with plastic wrap.
