I would lean towards what mk378 said, worn compressor clutch.
 
fogot to update you guys. as expected the compressor was the problem.

Last time I took the truck in the mechanic kept on eye on the compressor voltage and and it shut down even though power was going to it.

But what makes one system bulletproof and another prone to failure? Is my relatively low mileage a factor? Does Nissan have a better record as far as a/c systems go? Or is it just dumb luck.

its a chevy trail blazer these suck bigtime.
