Dex VI

This is my first post on this particular forum, so pls cut me some slack if this topic has been previously beat into the ground.

My local trans shop (reputable)is running a special on a "premium flush". They say they use multi purpose transmission fluid and dump an additive in to convert it over to Dex VI. Anyone ever heard of this?

Vehicle is a 2006 Buick Lu Cerne with 50,000 miles. Owners manual calls for Dex VI fluid.

I would be very wary of something like that. Why not just bring them a case or two of Dex VI for them to use?

Also, Dex VI is supposed to be able to go a long time. Why not just have them change the filter and refill if you want new fluid in there?

They're telling you a bunch of baloney. Compared with Dex III, Dex VI has twice the life in service. One can only achieve that by using a higher quality base stock (i.e., synthetic, or synthetic blend). I can't believe that a simple additive would accomplish that.

What is this "multi-purpose transd fluid"?

I don't know what the additive is or if it really would be equal to a DEXRON VI fluid. My personal gut reaction is I would doubt that it would bring the quality of the fluid up to current DEXRON specs since DEXRON VI is so much better and superior to DEXRON III in many specs. I would take the vehicle somewhere else that would assure me that a DEXRON VI fluid was being used. If your vehicle specifies the use of DEXRON VI it is very important that use use only that fluid.

+4 on using only Dex 6. Why spend a lot of money on a sophisticated vehicle and then cheap out on sa fluid that controls an extremely expensive component like an auto trans? Makes no sense.

OT: While we're talking about Dex VI ....what do you think of it as a replacement for Toyota T-IV in an 08' Corolla? The ST Dex VI at WM claims it 'is suitable' for Toyota T-IV and WS. Since T-IV is not synthetic and Dex VI is at least part synthetic...I was wondering if it's a step up?

Many fluid manufacturers claim their fluid is okay to use in T-IV applications. There is no hard evidence that shows Dex VI is a suitable substitue for T-IV. All we have is anecdotal evidence. The general concensus so far is to use only Toyota T-IV or Mobil 3309 for T-IV applications.

I don't think I would be able to keep a straight face for the few seconds it would take me to turn around and walk out if I heard that from a mechanic...(and I use the word "mechanic" very loosely)

Don't flush it. Go to dealer and get pan dropped, filter changed, refilled with Dex 6. Be sure to check it when they are done. My friend just had this done and they left it 1 qt low at the dealer.

Dex 6 is more than a few oz of additive.

BTW my Regal seems to like Dex 6. I just changed out Mobil 1 Dex 3 synthetic for Valvoline Dex 6 syn.

out of curiosity.. I wonder what brand additive they would be using to convert. ATP doesn't have anything and I didn't see any Lubegard being able to convert to dex 6.

aside from that.. don't you have to use dexron 3 to convert, a multi vehicle fluid would be more like an ATF +3/Mercon V type?

DexVI is a highly specialized fluid, we use it in GMC's back to 2004, all 4L80-E trans. They love it.

I'd be very cautious about assuming it would work in some other manufacturers trans. Autos can be very fussy about fluids, and the consequences are severe.

I've been using either GM Vehicle Care Dex VI or Valvoline Dex VI for a few years now and have been quite happy with it. I'd never use a fluid additive to try and convert a fluid, it certainly wouldn't give you the quality you wanted when a good fluid like Dex VI is spec'd.
