Deviating from the LL-01 3.5 HTHS value for a BMW

I would stay with the M1 0-40 and extend the OCI out to 15K KMs. The oil will more than handle that distance and the additional KMs will more than offset the cost.

M1 goes on sale all the time at CTC. I just got an OC worth ( now in the Jetta) a few weeks ago at $8.49/L. Add to that my Canadian Tire money I had on hand and 5L came to under $30 bucks. You can't beat that!

I know, I just picked up a pile of it for the M5, LOL! But I'm thinking it may not be on sale by the time I go to change the oil in this car again. I just changed the oil on the weekend.

CTC has a different oil on sale every week. M1's turn is sure to come around again soon!

Fair enough.

I vote M1 but due to brainwashing.

Well technically it isn't cheaping out

These are all top-tier oils, they just happen to be a little less money than the 0w40.

And you should talk Mr. Moates

How's about AMSOIL HDD 5w30? It is a 3.5 HTHS as I recall.

This is a 2000 328i and has long been out of warranty, anyway.

S/B good for 15K even in severe service, which this probably ain't...

Probably good for a couple years regardless of the miles.

Cheers!

Hi OVERKILL,

First I should mention that the Cdn made SM version of the M1 0W-40 (HTHS 3.6cP, VI 187) we get is lighter than the SM and now the SN USA made oil, but of course it is still a long drain oil.

Having said that, running a premium oil like Amsoil SSO 0w30 while lighter will not test the minimum viscosity requirements for your wife's 328i driven in a normal manner. The reason is, the oil temp's will not even hit 100C; ever.
That would including cruising at 149.999 km/h on the hottest summer day (you'll appreciate the significance of that figure).

Another option is any 5w30 syn' acquired on sale but don't push the OCI.

Don't you love it when authorities make sure you don't overwork the oil? How thoughtful of them

I'm not sure about the 328i, but the 330i (M54) hits 100C in normal driving regularly.

Why don't you go back to the Petro-Canada oils you have luck with in the past???

Duron 0W-30, either synthetic, or the blend, will work well here, as would Duron-E 0W-40.

Yes Duron 0w30 is an option with it's decent 176 VI.
Duron 0W-40 and Mobil Delvac 1 ESP 0W-40 are too heavy with HTHSVs of 4.04cP and 4.0+cP.

The Rotella likely is however.

The Rotella certainly will be cheaper.

As for the Delvac, the advantage is you can get it in the bigger jugs than the 0w-40, so that helps the price right away. The downside is that Imperial Oil distributors have rotating specials that don't seem to be advertised anywhere. One month, you'll get a 5 gallon pail of Delvac 1300 15w40 that spanks the price of Walmart's Rotella, and the next month, you're paying 35% more.

So, if you were to find the Delvac Elite on special, you'd be set. Also, what about some of the PC Duron line from a Petro-Canada distributor, if that hasn't been already mentioned?

Oops, I see it has been mentioned.

That said, my N55 hits 260F on the same oil with hopefully no ill effects. So there may be some headspace in the spec.

I'd be more comfortable running a 3.1cP OTC 5w30 syn' in the normally aspirated M52 or M54 than the spec' 3.5cP BMW 5w30 in the high output turbo N55 with oil temp's of 260F.
Having said that, I'm sure the minimum viscosity requirements are still being met, just not sure much reserve is remaining.
Too bad the N55 doesn't come with an oil pressure gauge.

As a fellow 328 owner, I would say to go for a 0w30 due to the light driving style it sees. I am not sure if it is made, but PP/PU in 0w30 would be my choice for that engine under that usage. Or load up on Royal Purple 0w/5w30/40 when it goes on sale

Not a SOPUS or BP guy though. My choices are Amsoil, Mobil or Petro-Canada pretty much.

I can't source Redline at a reasonable enough price to keep using it.

Go with PC. You can get Duron XL syn-blend for about $6.50/quart.

Inexpensive, and plenty stout for the service you are seeking.
