Was there a variance in oil consumption between Rotella and Delvac?

I think I have to call B.S. on that claim unless he forgot to put the drain plug back in after a Rotella fill...

Around here, Delvac isn't as readily available. If I see some, I might just give it a try providing pricing is as good or better than Rotella. Hard to break a habit when you know you have a good thing going.

I picked the Delvac up today it was $11.83 Rotella was $11.00 I am going to put it in tomorrow. I am anxious to see how it it does. I have to admit I don't ride much at all any more. I have a 2.5 yr old and a 1 week old at home riding will be tough for a while.

Hmmm ...
  • If the quality of an oil is a function of its price, and
  • Delvac cost 83 cents more than Rotella, that means
  • Delvac is 7.5% better oil than Rotella (0.83/11.00)
Right?

The logic is flawless.

Sooooo, using that theory, if I pay $58.00 for a gallon of Hollywood designer oil, it will be close to 19 times better!

If I get on average 25 years out my motorcycle engines now ....let's see.... that would, mean I should get 475 years out of them. Right? What the he!! have I been thinking all these years????

I just went with Delvac because after reading every post I could I thought that Delvac was a better choice by a very slight margin.

The JASO rating is pretty much eyewash. Any HDEO will perform well. Heck, I'm using up a stash I aquired of 10 year old Pennzoil Long Life 15w40 and the bikes run just as good as the Rotella.

Ride more, worry less.

Not that it really matters. These two, along with Delo and a few others, perform so admirably that the oil itself is not the issue, but rather price.

I suggest the OP purchase whatever the "best" bargin is, because there will be little to no difference in a series of consistent UOAs.

Could be, but I wish someone could dig up data to show otherwise. Until someone shows me different, I will stay with Delvac.

Running the blue jug 5W40 Rotella in my VTX1300. Still have that loud clunk between 1st and 2nd but every other gear is like butter...almost too smooth! Actually not sure if I like that feeling crazy as that sounds

Any updates,how's it doing????

So far so good with the oil I only have about 200 miles on it. It has been cold here I took it to work this morning it is only 40 degrees out it will be warmer later. it has been running around 200 degrees when I ride. I was getting on it the other day driving the bike harder then I ever do and the temp stayed consistent around 190 never going over 200. I have not been in traffic where I had to sit for a long time just traffic lights. I will keep you posted as it gets warmer and I get to ride the bike for longer periods of time.

They are comparing CI4 to CJ4 with the Rotella. Seeing that CI4 is getting harder and harder to find until it is all gone, IMO you would have to compare CJ4 to CJ4 formulas.

CI4 has more addatives, CJ4 *could* have a better base stock. Granted that these are VOA and this is how they look on paper but UOA *could* be different. Plus this is one persons opinion based on the data he collected.

One guy may rate an oil higher because it has more ZDDP but maybe his engine runs extremly hot and he really need s higher flash point and he is cooking off his oil when in reality an oil with a little less ZDDP with a higher flash point would be better for his application. Likewise if I was in Anartic a very low pour point would be more important to me than which one had the most Phos. This is just a vague comparision but trying to show the big picture.

I usually buy Delvac but Shell Rotella T has a mail in rebate deal until 7/31/09. They call it the "Get There" Free Fuel Pomotion Visa Gift Card.

Buy 2 gallons of Rotella 15w40, get a $10 gift card. My local Wally World has a price of $11/gallon. I'm getting two for $6/gallon oil! I'm sure my bike will never know the difference.

i had my bike out for hours today. I have had Delvac in for months now. I am very happy with the delvac the temps were around 210 all day. I was on the park way hammering for 2 hours then just driving around all over. No traffic a few stop lights.. I only have 800 miles on the oil but the bike seems to like it.
