In the past, they seemed to be the top of the lower priced filters, having twice the media of Purolator and many others and 3 times as much as Fram. Currently many of them are the newer Ecore construction. They are widely bashed for being different. Yes, out of the millions used in the last 6 years, there are examples of them that look bad when removed from service.
The Ecores are a product of Champion Laboratories who sell filters under a number of names. If they produced an Ecore to fit my truck, I would use it. I am already using a cartridge filter in my car, all of which use similar construction, but are easier to detect problems in.
Many people judge filters on how they are constructed. There is very little evidence to back up the superiority of the favored steel endcaps and center tube or amounts of media.
Fram is almost universally condemned here for its cardboard endcaps and skimpy media. I haven't used one in over 10 years since I cut open the last one I bought. Solid facts to base my decision, no way. That wouldn't keep me from buying a Delco over a Fram. At least, unlike Purolator, both are made in America by American companies.
