Dealer prices for basic vehicle service items

'Relatively speaking', prices don't seem that bad. In other words, seen worse. For the average person this site, yeah wouldn't consider it. Otoh as noted, there's some that know nothing and/or couldn't care less about diy maintenance. For them, it's just part of the cost of vehicle ownership.

I think an oil change at Lexus is $110. Ouch. Sorta...
They rotate tires, clean the car, check it over, etc.
Nice place to wait as well.
I have never had them service any of our cars, but for some, it ain't that bad of a deal.
We are having the last "free" service done on the RX this morning.
Coffee, fruit, bagels, tv, internet, etc.

2014 BMW X1, dealer service before I purchased the vehicle. Listed as intake silencer service,(replace air filter) $145.00 , $28.00 dollars for a cheap Korean made air filter they listed it as Genuine BMW air filter. I purchased a Mann replacement filter for $18.00.

you gotta remember the crowd here is a lot more mechanically knowledgable in car stuff than the average person. Just being on this board and reading it puts you in a different league than the average person .

i know plenty of people that bring their car to the dealer for service and buy the upsell. knowledge is power, and they don't know any better.

Excellent quality.

Lower price than any aftermarket.

I've found dealer/OEM parts are reasonably priced. I always call and if similar or cheaper go OEM. As far as service and service prices, depends on the dealer.

This makes sense. If they already have the filter boxes opened up as a part of the "free" multipoint, they shouldn't charge the $99 or whatever extortion rates they usually do to change them.

$110 is oil change only. The full service with tire rotation is about $250.

The tech isn't paid directly to do the multi point inspection. Some cars like Chevy Cobalt ate brutal with half a dozen screws retaining the air filter. It's a long shot gamble that the customer will go for the replacement... One that gamble's the lube techs time.

When I worked at a tire store I made "7&7". $7.50/hour plus $7 flat rate. If someone could structure the business model better it wouldn't have such a bad rap with perverse incentives.

Can you expand on this? Most incandescent bulbs don't care about polarity. LED's won't work backwards but also don't conduct electricity in that direction either. I would think shorting a bulb socket would blow a fuse and not hurt any bulbs. I'm not understanding your reference.

They were plug in bulbs, forget the #, but one terminal had been folded over to the other side, short circuiting the voltage regulator (most dash lighting has it's own VR)
so within a year, lights out. When I got in there, sure enough, one bulb had it's wires crossed. It wasn't that big a deal, only one hard reach to disconnect the old school
speedometer drive from the cluster,to get it all free & service. But they were already paid to do that, not sabotage it. Did I mention I found this after an overheat
episode due to faulty timing belt swap/loss of coolant/overheat? They did the timing belt & the dash bulbs. Did 'em both real well. So well I never went back after
complaining. Of course the dealership changed hands four years later, hope they improved on their service & sabotage capabilities as well.

Hyundai Dealer in Northwest San Antonio does a great job.

Bit of an older location, no fuss no muss.

$32 for an oil change, semi syn 5w30 and hyundai filter and crush washer.

No upsell, 20 minute job.

For that price they can do it every 3k miles.

I assume a drain tool is the drain plugs wrench but what's an Irving?

An Irving is an artifact of Apple trying to correct o-ring as I type.

Sorry. Didn't have time to proof read this morning.

The drain tool inserts into the filter housing to drain the oil before removing the housing. Works fairly well. I use a 1/2" vinyl hose slipped over the drain tool to keep the oil flow neatly directed.

I believe you absolutely. As a former dealership employee I saw endless amounts of sabotage on customer vehicles at both places I worked at.
It is COMMON.
