This is weird but cool. The article I was reading about it said it can be programmed to follow a person (as shown in the video), carrying a load as needed.

DARPA? If they're behind it, then eventually it will evolve into one of these...

Up until WWII, The US Army used mules for such work. I can see using robots for dealing with explosives. But for pack trains, mules work fine. About 15 yrs ago, I came across an article about using mules to string cable along an over grown right of way.

The only use that thing has in extreme environments. That thing has no practical military application. 1% out of 100 humans is better than 100% out of one machine. If one human goes down, you still have 99%. If the machine breaks down, you have 0%.

My opinion on it's usefulness doesn't mean I think it shouldn't have been invented.

Contaminated nuclear sites would be a good use. It might be able to recover bodies. If they had a way to store lots of battery power on one of those things, they might be good for space exploration (planets or asteroids).

Legged squad support system. Looks like a very good idea. Have a few of these carry the ammo, food, water for troops which lighten their loads. These could also be used in dangerous areas like mine fields or where other booby traps might be.

Did you hear how noisy those things are? Who is going to fix it when it breaks down in the field? An APC would be cheaper to carry heavy loads.

Some of these are downright creepy. There are other videos out of the Cheetah going much faster, and finally "crashes" (stopped by its tether).

The Sand Flea is the best and obviously has a million uses:
