Dangers of warming up engine....

In a follow up article today they said the woman was not very familiar with manual transmissions and she may have stepped on the clutch while standing and then let the clutch out, got caught between the door and the car. First article did not mention manual transmission....

I did something similar once, I headed to work early, probably arriving near 4:30 AM, pulled into my parking spot, put the e-brake on, and then let up on the clutch, stalling the car and embarrassing myself greatly. Of course, the e-brake was on and since I wasn't planning on going anywhere I wasn't giving it gas to move, so it just jumped a little and stalled so no one was hurt, but boy did I feel dumb. Gotta stick to taking the automatic vehicles when I'm headed in that early. :)

Still happens to me occasionally, forget I'm in first when I'm groggy or not paying attention. I sometimes also stall when my boots are wet my foot slips off the clutch.

plus cold fast idle speed

I suppose car makers could adopt a start-only-in-neutral interlock, but it would take away a manual's simplicity. People still find ways to drive over themselves with automatics, usually by trying to get back inside a runaway car.

Oddly enough Ford vehicles already know when the manual transmission is not in neutral--if you run the EEC-IV self test it gives you a code if the manual transmission is not in neutral!

Years ago, before transmission interlocks and such, my wife managed to start my F150 while in first gear, clutch engaged, and proceeded to drive it into the side of the house. Not a happy evening, that..

that sucks to hear about......
1983 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ60 4 speed manual transmission, no fancy safety switches to speak of.
Years ago, come out from food shopping in cold weather. For some reason, my wife has the keys. I'm loading the bags into the rear from the rear hatch and she proceeds to try to start the truck to warm it up. Truck lurched up since it was in first gear and came within about 2 feet of someone walking and another car parked in front of us. I screamed and thankfully she stopped and the truck didnt start.
Not fun explaining why that happened to the guy, he wasnt happy, neither was I. That couldnt happen in a new car/truck, thankfully.

During first hour auto shop in high school (thankfully not my class) they were working on a 3/4 ton flatbed parked behind another car, which was sitting on the lift. After a few failed attempts to get it started, someone left the ignition switch on, and the stick in 1st gear. A few of them decided it needed to be moved forward a few feet so they began pushing it from behind. The engine fired and the truck lerched forward, striking the car ahead of it, pushing it off the front of the lift and down onto a cinder block retaining wall. The wall tipped over and narrowly missed several students. Quite a scene to walk into later in the day.

Well, at least the truck started. :-) Unfortunately, the car it pushed off the front of the lift was a fully restored 65 Mustang.

My 1995 Toyota Avalon will not start if its transmission is set to drive. It has to be set to park.

How can she proceed to try to start the truck? How long does it take to start?

The truck was in gear when she tried to start it and she didn't push the clutch pedal in. Therefore the truck started to move. The starter may not have been turning fast enough to allow the engine to start due to the additional load of moving the entire vehicle.

My dad's Opel GT does not have a clutch interlock switch. When I was about 8 years old I was playing in the car like I was driving. I hit the start button and ran the car into the house. I still remember those two hours waiting for him to get off work and see what I had done.

Turn the key while in first gear and it would lurch a few feet instantly. When you are parked, with another car in front of you, you have a couple feet at best. someone was walking in between, and it could have been ugly...........
saftey features are good...........usually for those unfamiliar

Plus it would make it impossible to push-start it if your battery went dead - one of the few advantages that manuals have over automatics. Although I see manufacturers warning against push-starting manuals nowadays anyway.

Present tense? Does he still have the little jewel? Those were nice looking cars.

I saw a new Opel GT in Belgium last October. It looks just like a Saturn Sky except for the badges. Now it's made in the US on the same production line as the Sky/Solstace

Still have it but it's a 1973 or whatever the last year was in the US. Currently the 1.9L is rebuilt and ready to go in but we have a spare GN motor in the garage so not sure what's going to happen.

I wasn't aware the GT was still made. When I was in Greece I saw a couple really nice looking Mantas from the 70s. I stayed in a house in Tripolis that was right across from an Opel dealer so I spent some time looking at what they had to offer but nothing sporty at that dealer.
