er.. that's strange. If you hadn't have shown the outside of the can I would have assumed it was a Fram. Same core, end cap, material, leaf spring design and bypass valve.

It is a knockoff or re-branded Fram Extra Guard. I recognize "4967", which is a Fram p/n for the 1ZZ-FE 1.8L Toyota engine. A blue shell with "MGL" added to the p/n is the only difference. Normally would be an orange shell and a "PH".

How much was that filter?

is that the O'Reilly's house brand filter?

Yup that's the O'Reilly house brand. Their filters range in price from $2.99 - $6.99 if purchased separately (and not as part of their OC specials).

I think that last picture pretty much disproves the theory that dirt stays in the media and never goes through an open dome end bypass valve.

The older MicroGard filters (O'Reilly house brand) were basically a Fram without the sandpaper grip. I believe the newer MicroGard filters are E-Core. Of course, Fram and E-Core now have the same parent company.

It depends on the filter. I have newer 7317s for my girlfriend's CR-V and they all have metal center tubes.

Well, yea, I should have mentioned that. Sometimes an E-Core was never made for a certain application and sometimes O'Reilly just hasn't gotten rid of their older Fram-built filters either.

Definitely. Guess it always pays to check out the filter you're getting before paying.

Yeah that's a pretty telling pic, but I'll admit I've never seen one that looked like that before either. Was the filter stuck in bypass, or in bypass far more than normal? We'll probably never know.

What's the orientation of the filter when on the car? I'm guessing horizontal based on how that crud has settled around the bypass valve.

I can't recall seeing that much crud previously on a bypass valve with a posted dissection here, interesting. The rest of the filter looks like it held up ok though.

However, based on recent postings it appears O'R MG's are now going to be made by Champ, following the pattern of the Wally TLE oil filters which are now Champ made instead of an orange can. Basically the TLE's are Super Tech's with texture, meaning some are ecores.
