Conclusion? I don't know what I don't know! It's only a guess on my part the blue goo is assembly lube as it's in between every pleat.

I'll let the media set for a day or three, scrape off some of the blue stuff and take additional pics.

I think the 2nd and 3rd OCI filters will tell the tale...

What was the fill for the OIC. I'd use 5K on dino. With that junk, 5K on the factory fill.
Great camera work.

I don't get it, most rebuilt engines shops tell you to run a short breakin and then OIC ( some even a coolant change) but new auto manaufactures never do.

Nice, well-made filter. USA made to boot. As far as the blue stuff, is it possible it is the paint that was scraped off your base plate? When did that happen?

I assume the pleat tips are glued together like in Toyota "F" filters. Does it look like the bonding held at the tips or is there evidence of leakage through the pleat ends?

Aside from the blue goo, looks fine. I notice there is paint scraped off the filter base. I doubt it, but is that somehow the source of the blue goo?

m2200b, the factory fill oil was dino 5W-20

Tones/kanling - I wondered about the blue paint that is missing from the baseplate - it may have come off when I wiped the filter after removal/before pisc. I don't know...

lyco5555 - Let's say I only ran the factory fill for 1K miles (or less); my hunch is the filter wouldn't look a whole lot different. Would you then tell me that 1K OCI intervals are too long?

kanling - I don't know about the pleat tips, I'll have to get back to you on that!

It looks FINE!
Probably could go 20K without any problems.
The blue stuff seems to be the paint particles from the filter?

Figured out what happened to the blue paint on the baseplate - it was rubbed off by the filter cutting tool...

Still don't know what the blue stuff is in the filter media. I installed a duplicate Honda/Filtech filter, so we'll see how it looks when I cut it open in 10K miles

Great photos but what am I suppose to be looking for? I heard the Filtech filters were really good filters, especially when compared to the newer Fram/Honeywell that replaced the Filtech. So, I bought half a dozen of them but I still don't know what really separates a good filter from a bad one.

I would assume if the blue stuff was assembly lube it would emulsify and/or be dissolved in the oil. At any rate the filter did its job and filtered it out.

My first impression from the pics was the blue was paint. What is the external paint color of your motor. Could also be some sort of dried rtv particles from all the gaskets.

martyi - just wanted to share the pics - nothing specific to look for, rather I wanted to know what kind of funk might be floating around from the factory fill oil.

MC5W20 - the engine is bare aluminum, no paint.

I would guess the blue stuff is some sort of silicon gasket material perhaps.. ?

Either way, that's a good lookin' filter. Thanks for cuttin 'er open.
