I am on vacation this week. I changed my oil and cut open a used L14477. Sorry my camera literally blew up a while ago. The battery exploded when it was on my desk. Saw it as it happened too... Also kanling already has nudie pictures of this filter posted.
Anyways, I used pliers-type of filter wrench when I installed this filter (could not turn it ¾ turn with oily hand), and managed to put some scratches and 1/4 inch dents on it. So I wanted to cut it open and see if the element was okay. (Which I thought it would be, didn’t think the can would leak either).
I cut it open with a hacksaw in the garage. Some lady walked by and looked at me like a nut, as I sat on the floor and sawed a filter open on my oil drain pan.
The can seemed to be composed of a light alloy of copper. As I sawed through it, the metal has a hint of copper tone.
The filter was on for 5 months and 6000 miles on M1 5W30. The scratches did not even rust. The biggest dent cleared the element and as far as I can tell there is no damage. The ADBV was still soft, but it could be showing first signs of hardening. I bent it 90 degrees and it took 15+ seconds to fully regain its shape. I do not know if this is normal but it seemed to seal against the base plate well, as Purolator has a ring of lip on the base plate to mate with the ADBV.
BPV was well shut. I am very doubtful that it ever opened – it opens at 14-18 PSI and this is a low restriction filter, this was a hot summer run on M1.
The filter itself was good. Nothing (besides dirty oil) to be found in the element. The element seemed very robust. One bad thing though, the crimp strip was 1/6 of an inch too short to enter the glue, like someone else reported on a Quaker State unit.
This is it. I then made a trip to Wally World and dumped the filter and the old oil.
