I don't know if anyone else ran into this.

I just helped my neighbor do the full Monty on his 05 Cummins. Everything except the oil (yet). Diffs ..t-case ..PS ..and automatic.

Anyway, We pulled the pan and changed the filter then buttoned it back up and disconnected the return line from the cooler at the trans to purge the rest of the fluid. No problems ..the cooler circuit works in neutral (not in PARK) and is marked as such on the dipstick for checking level. After infusing 18 quarts ..we hooked up the return line and topped up. Filled to the lower level of the crosshatched range after running it through the gears with the brake on (always have done this and it's worked every time). Decided to road test it ...ran it a few miles of in town driving ..pulled in and checked it ..not even showing on the stick. Added another quart in decreasing amounts (1/2, 1/4, 1/4) and finally got it to the mid span of the cross hatch range.

Anyone else run into this? Not that it's a big deal ..and you catch it easy enough if you're doing things with some sense of "good practices" ..but I could see someone who hasn't encountered it before not catching it.

Yes - and it happens on other AT's as well. I've always chalked it up in my mind to trapped airspace and such. I could be living in dreamland.....but check the level again in a few days.

Ford's 4R70W does the same thing, I have drained the pan and converter on several crown vics and refilled/checked using the shift through the gears against the brake method. Drive it a few blocks and recheck...barely on the stick.
