Hey guys Saturday my key got stuck in the ignition and would not turn. Called a locksmith. They took my car to their shop. He pulled out the cylinder and said the wafers are all mangled inside. He said by Monday he will try to order wafers that match mine because he didnt have those types in his shop. I'm hoping he can find something because its been 2 days now and I'm stuck with no car. It's a honda crv 1998 automatic. I brought the car to greece 10 years ago were I live now . Anyone know how much a new ignition would cost if the locksmith can't rebuild mine ??

Can the locksmith remove parts so "any" key would work? I've seen this done with certain locks.
He is trying to rebuild mine to work with my existing 2 keys. Problem is he dont have the wafers that fit in a honda lock so tomorrow he has to order them. Hopefully he can find them because my car is in greece now. I shipped it here from the united states

Then just leave the wafers out. Nobody but you will know and who is going to steal a 22 year old CRV?
Thats what i told the locksmith just leave the wafers out. He said he prefers to order the wafer kit to fix it right. Meaning more days without a car

Still thinking about shipping a 22 year old car to Greece.

The locksmith will know but it sounds like he's an honest man.

I already shipped it here 10 years ago...ive been in greece since then lol

(y) Good luck with the fix. How are the mechanics in Greece?
So far everythings been great , iam only 5 miles from the honda dealerships here. Thats were i usually service the car. But for this problem with my ignition lock iam trying to avoid the dealers. Hopefully the locksmith calls tomorrow

I think in other parts of the world people may steal that vehicle. You can't think everyone in the world lives In a rust belt where a 22 year old would be falling apart.

Look at Cuba for instance. How old is the average car in that country?

I purchase a very well used 1971 chevy in the mid-1980's. The edge of the key was smooth, not sure if from wear or if a locksmith did something. That key with no teeth started the car, and could be removed from the ignition while the car was running. A good system for a car not worth stealing.

You still need the right key to unlock the door.
Assuming they aren't a professional. I had my accord broken into at the commuter train station. They must have used one of those inflatable bags they put into the edge of the window and one of those long bars which are used to open power doors or click the lock open. They stole the stereo out of it at the time.

UPDATE. The car is still at the locksmiths garage and he says he is unable to find a honda ignition repair kit so he will go junkyard diving to see if he can pull wafers out a used car. At this point in on day 4 with no car and at my witts end. Iam thinking of going to look for a new car this week because I cant wait anymore.
