Couldn't hurt and it would hold more sludge
+1 on several short OCIs.
Oh I forgot about a bigger filter. I show that my Fords take Fram PH8A which in Motorcraft is the FL1A (Wix 51515). If that fits his slant six, then the longer FL299 would fit also (Wix version 51773)

Yes, the larger Ford filter(Wix 51515,NAPA Gold 1515,FL1A,etc.)fit the Mopar slant(and V-8's) w/ plenty of clearance.Good suggestion until the sludge is gone. I also like the T-shirt strainer idea.THANKS.

Well, I'd run the 51515 all the time on that engine. I am running it on the Aerostar 3.0 V6 which is supposed to run a FL400 (much narrower than the FL1A/51515).

The T-shirt idea came from when I was young and we opened a beer (had to use an opener to get the caps off back then) and found a chip in the lip of the neck. Not sure if there was any glass inside, we strained it through a T-shirt.

After reading this thread I have decided to never cut a filter open again. Just way too much to obsess about. Plus I would have to wash my hands like 27 times afterwards...
