I am still new here, and soaking up info, but I figured I would ask you guys what you think of my choice:

It is a 1987 Jeep Cherokee with the 4.0 L6 and 124,000 miles. It sees a lot of highway miles, lately 3000 or so a month at times, mixed with some 3-5 mile commutes where I try to always let the engine get up to operating temp, and some quick runs to the fire department where I volunteer where it gets run hard and no time to warm up or cool down.

I have had it since it had 86,000 and have always run M1 10-30 with a 8000-10000 OCI. It uses about a quart every 5000, a lot of that is due to a valve cover leak (its warped and I haven't gotten a new one yet).

What do you guys think?

If mine:

Before next oil change, run dose of Gumout Regane.

Next change - Mobil1 10w30 w/ Motorcraft FL-1A. 7,500 mile OCI.

All of above available at Wal-Mart...

Mobil 1 10w30 is a great oil selection, I would pair it up with a Purolator Pure One filter and go another 200,000 miles.

Happy motoring!

I left that out but thats exatcly what I usually run filter wise.

If avaiable that engine would probably love GC. But why fix what isn't broke?

Yes that oil is on the thin side of the 30 weight range for what those engines are claimed to like. I would be tempted to try Autozones 0w30 German Castrol (Almost a 40 Weight), Castrol Syntec 10W-40, Mobil 1 0W-40 European Formula or Mobil 1 Truck & SUV 5W-40.

On the otherhand if it aint broke....

I would clean out the engine with a 5w30 like Chevron Supream and Auto RX. Follow the directions it should condition your seals for some time then If you stay with Mobil 1 add a qt of redline to beef it up. Or I agree with all the other oils including GC.

I recently switched my nephew's 1991 Cherokee 4.0L over to Chevron Delo 15w40 with a Purolator Premium Plus filter. I initially had some trepidation:

...but I must say that it runs GREAT on the stuff.

These engines foul the oil pretty quickly. This is one of the advantages of the Delo. It has a robust additive package that helps keep all the garbage in suspension and prevents excessive wear. As an added bonus, it helps suppress the infamous 4.0L "piston slap." I consider it a terrific bargain at less than $2/qt.

In your climate, you can probably run 15w40 year 'round.

A popular mixing option for Mobil 1 is to add 1 qt 15W-50 to the 4-4.5 qts of 10w30.

This bumps the viscosity of the mix up to 11.5 cSt which is basically just a heavy 30 wt oil.

Your consumption rate of 1 qt every 5k miles is already very good, however, this mix should be even better, especially in the Jeep engines that tend to like a heavier weight oil!

Mobil 0w-40 for 12 months or ...... longer

The 0w-40 meets GM-LL-A-025

The following info is from Saab concerning oils that meet this spec can run up to two years if mileage is not exceeded ... it's a heck of an oil

INTERMEDIATE SERVICE is set by an algorithm that determines when service is required. Miles driven, crankshaft revolutions, number of starts/cold starts, ambient temperatures, speed and engine temperature are among the measurements used to compute the interval with the TIME FOR SERVICE message being set between 8,000 and a maximum of 15,000 miles. If the mileage interval is not met, the message will be set at 2 years.

NOTE: The actual oil condition is NOT measured, only the above calculations performed.

It is important to note that this computation is based on the use of fully-synthetic oil which meets GM-LL-A-025 specification. This is a specification that is currently not commonly found in the US. The only oils that are readily available that meet this specification are Mobil 0W40 SuperSyn and Saab 0W30 Turbo Long-Life Fully Synthetic oil.

I have been running Mobil 1 5W30 in my Explorer 4.0 with either a Motorcraft filter or Purolator.
7500 OCI. Add 1/2 quart at about 5,000 miles.
No complaints what so ever.
Also in NC.
The main advantage to the Mobil 1 for me is to lengthen the OCI.
