I walk 4 miles a day at work and have been hit twice in 3 years. #@$%! is with people driving off afterward with a dent in their hood that was made by a person? Hit and run against pedestrians is just rediculous. I just slid over the fender and hood, and after getting off ther driver just speeds away. Only bruises those two times.
Next time I'm crossing and somebody almost hits me in a crosswalk, I'd like to kick in their quarter panel. "I didn't see you"= I didn't look. At all. The body shop is a lot cheaper than my funeral costs.
I always cross the street in a crosswalk with the signal often in a lane marked yield, yet people just don't stop and you have to jump out of the way.
Some years back the then-girlfriend was super dehydrated and exhausted and collapsed in the middle of the road. I got clipped by the door and mirror of some car I had tried to stop while getting her to safety. I was waving a fully deployed umbrella, pretty hard to miss. Just a couple of bruises though.
Never had a chance to get law enforcement envolved with any of this. People just drive away, and witnesses don't care or don't get involved.
Bombing hills?
Skateboards don't have brakes, other than mashing the tail into the pavement or dragging your foot. Kind of hard to do when gravity wants to make you go down a hill faster than cars. At certain speeds the trucks start to oscillate/vibrate "speed wobbles" which makes you want to get off, quick! You can take 2 or 3 steps and then you turn into superman!
70mm wheels poured with 78 durometer urethane goes fast even over rough pavement. Now I use my old cruddy bearings on downhill boards for the built in retardation of speed.
Even on this site, friction can be your friend.
