Untenable!

I guess the local newspaper posting is really out of the question!

People still read the "paper"?

I am ok with it. I hope it will cut down on my local poop dealerships double and triple posting the same cars over and over.

I agree its a good idea. its a TON cheaper than ebay; and it will hopefully weed out dealers and repeat listers. I hate it when I search for a car, let's just say Lexus, and 99% of the posts are from dealers listing cars that are NOT a Lexus yet have a whole paragraph in their listing with every imaginable car brand, model, word.

I'm not in favor of it, would be better for legit listings if you had a way to make a verified account and then could list once a quarter (or however long seems best) free. That would be enough to drastically cut down on vehicle listing abuse, and the verified accounts would cut down on all kinds of issues for non-vehicle listings too, whether it be spam, robberies, illegal items, whatever.

I could see a way to get around it by posting your vehicle in the auto parts section. Got a rusty POS that someone could use for parts or is somewhat driveable that is registered and has a valid title? Could post it on both categories but rather put it on the category where I rather not take a loss.

I can see both sides.
Looking to get rid of a cheap car ( I also agree that the site gets clogged up with junk and dealers posting in owner section (I report them all the time, but nothing happens). Even a $5 fee will keep a lot of the spam posting off there.

As for the multiple listings of same thing, there is an option to merge duplicate posts is the search option, just check the "bundle duplicates" and they will show just once. Helps a lot to reduce clutter.

Will be interesting how this drives business to Facebook Marketplace.

I will state that selling just about anything besides a car, I have had way more luck on Facebook Marketplace and local sales groups than craiglist. Recent items I sold resulted in over 30 inquiries on Facebook. Only 1 hit on craigslist.

I always thought they were missing the boat by not charging a small amount. Hopefully, it will keep the bottom feeders away where people can do honest business together without having to deal with scammers interested in taking your money.

FB Marketplace sucks for cars. No organization and no way to narrow down a search by miles, color, engine etc. And Is this $5 for one week, which is how long a car ad stays up in my local CL. Should have done this years ago.

I think it has a lot more to do with the outright scam ads that are just phishing for anything, probably even just an active email address. You know, the 2010 Silverado with blurry pics from Google Images, "3rd row seats" and "Sync" for $1500. CL gets overrun with posts like this when people don't flag them. Charging will get rid of that crap.

I always said the same thing about Auto Trader's site. They used to have so many obvious scams there. At least a cursory check these days shows the obvious scam ads (i.e. an F-250 being sold in Saskatchewan at a lowball price with palm trees in the background of the pictures) aren't around, at least for the area I look at.

Would love to see the dealers and spam off of there. I think the dealers will still post. I worry it will eliminate great deals. I've scored some cheap cars off there over the years and I don't think owners would have posted them if it cost money.

I believe they have been charging dealers for some time now and I have seen many times some local dealers were disguising themselves as private owners just to avoid the fee. Atleast no more deception.

I think this will result in less people using craigslist. The amount of sellers on there has gone down a lot due to Facebook Marketplace. I know a few people who buy and sell equipment and household items and they no longer use craigslist due to the spam, fake listings, and low ballers. A $5 charge will only further influence the decision to sell elsewhere.

I must have just made it in for free. Listed a vehicle on 04/15, sold it on 04/17. Deleted ad the next day. I had 4 contacts total. Three criminals/scammers and one good guy.

What I find interesting is if they charge $5 per listing and fewer people use it they still have massively increased a revenue stream.
