So I have a Craftsman socket set that is probably 15 - 20 years old. The sockets and handles themselves are perfectly fine, but the latches on the plastic storage case have broken off. They're not hinged latches, but rather latches where the plastic is simply thinner at the hinge-point and from opening/closing over time, they fatigued and broke.

I've had good warranty service from Sears in regards to my hand tools (e.g. screwdrivers, tape measures, etc.) in the past. What do you think they'll do here?

- Nothing and tell me the case isn't covered under the warranty.

- Provide me with a new case? I don't know if they make/sell the case alone.

- Provide me with a whole new, equivalent, socket set with storage case.

I suspect only the tools are warrantied, not the case, but you won't know until you ask...

They will do nothing about the case (It is not the tool is what I was told, and could not get one anyway.) Mine did the same thing.

You can buy a small plastic case at Sears to put your set in (I did) although it does not have the fitted compartments of the original.

The older Craftsman stuff is miles better than the [censored] they are putting out now. You should hold on to those tools; they are the last of an era.

But, yea, I cannot imagine them even still having the same case available.

Yeah, lifetime warranty on Craftsman tools, plastic storage case, not so much. Fwiw, I still have a small Craftsman 3/8" drive ratchet sae/metric 6 point socket set I received as a gift back in the 70's, it too came in a plastic storage case. Luckily latches still function.

As suggested I suppose you could try, but I'd say chances are slim and none, and slim left town.

Check the description, if you have 9 sockets and a wrench and they call it an 11 piece tool kit, the case is the 11th piece. If so, make this argument.

Having had the same case, Gorilla tape would probably work better.

They will likely do the first one, but definitely won't do the third one.

They do sell bare cases that might work with the set you already have.

I'd bet on nothing also; however if you get the right person behind the counter, they might be able to hook you up.

My set has 65 sockets in both inch and millimeter sizes. There are 3 drive handles of various sizes, a spark plug socket, a 3/8" extension, a magnetic bit handle and 5 bits, and the case.

Here's what I have:

You can see the closure tab that has snapped off. If they can't/won't do anything, I may buy some tiny hinges from Home Depot and see if I can get them to adhere using some Liquid Nails I have laying around.

I've got a set or two of what you are talking about. Get some small hinges from the hobby/hardware store and use some small sheet metal screws to hold the hinges in place. Install the screws with some gorilla glue around them so they don't work out.
Craftsman won't warranty the case.

You actually had the tab come off, on my 3/8" set, the whole hinge across the back failed. In that case, try the hinge idea and with some sort of epoxy, the screws might hold in. You aren't out anything. Worst case scenario, you buy a whole new case.

i personally find most of those blown cases a nuisance except for specialty tools.
