Cotton Swabs for the Ears...Good or No Good?

I've always heard that using them actually pushes wax further down...if that's the case, it's not obvious to me that it's happening. I've somehow convinced myself that if I rotate the swab while going in, maybe the wax will twist around the swab and come out instead of being pushed ahead of the swab. In any case, I get wax out and I'm not deaf, so something's working.

Ya gotta be careful. Too deep can push the wax beyond your reach, and deeper still will puncture your drum.

I try to swab after every shower around the outer ear. If I have wax in deep, I'll use an irrigator and some peroxide.

I can say that I have managed to plug my ear with wax doing this. Twice.

Tried some earwax-dissolving drops but they didn't help much. Both cases required a visit to the walk-in clinic, where doc fills an elephant-gun-sized syringe with water and blasts it into your ear to blow the wax out. Apparently if that doesn't work, they send you to a specialist who vacuums it out, though I didn't need that.

Since then, I still do it on occasion, but much less often, and much more carefully.

Always have, going right in for the kill. =-)

That probably applies to people who do not swab regularly and grab a swab to dig at their gunk build up, who manage to push it in further.

Alex.

The problem is the viscosity of the wax, I leave mine in (its good for the ear) I do use an additive to improve flow, "oil ear drops", mostly during the winter months, in summer the flow of wax is much improved due to hotter temperatures, just use the swab to clean around the ear, not in the ear canal.

Is anyone into nasal rinsing.....?

yep, first sign of sinus issues, and out comes the warm salt water.

As to the topic, I once plugged my ear good with cotton swabs. Still use them, but maybe weekly.

If I'm starting to get more than I think desirable, I use peroxide.

My wife was watching Oprah

last year and I happened to be near by. A so-called expert was on saying that cleaning your ears with cotton swabs is a big no-no. He said puncturing an ear drum with this method is fairly common. He recommended pouring a small amount of baby oil in the ear. This supposedly dissolves and drains the wax. Good advice, but I still swab anyway.

Maybe I'm abnormal in this, but whenever I swab my ears--which is every time after I shower--I never see any sign of wax on the swab, and my ears are definitely not plugged with wax.

i first use a medium hatchet on the ear hair. once that forest has been cut down i grade the wax out with a swab. the swab gets done after every shower. for some reason if i dont do this ill get an ear infection. its something that runs in my family as my father is the same way, and his father too.
once every week or 2 ill do the whole tilt my head sideways and drop peroxide down my ear while posting on bitog for 5 minutes thing that im sure everyone else does.
right?
right...?
