I went to purchase a battery for my car at walmart, but they were out of stock on my size. 4 1/2 year ago the battery cost $45. They want $80 for it today. Why have batteries gone up so much?? Car is a 2002 Maxima

At the risk of this getting marked as political.....

Quantitative easing has made the price of global commodities higher in terms of the dollar.

I just wanted an answer why something doubled in 4 1/2 years. Some people just feel compelled to reply even if they have nothing really to say. Lets try to stay on topic

Simple:

Price per lb of lead:

July 2010 $.82
July 2011 $1.22

I have no idea what it was 4-1/2 years ago. Also, look at the price of fuel to transport batteries now compared to 4-1/2 years ago.

Lots of factors are driving this. You have somewhere between one and three billion more people looking for that same lead compared to 4.5 years ago... Plus there is a lot more funny money chasing goods too...

I have been buying group 65 from walmart for the same price since 2005. Granted now their warranty has changed, i now go to Sams club for the interstates or Costco for kirkland.

I just looked at walmart batteries 2 days ago and yup still 75.00 Installed for my group 65's

your question is naive and ridiculous. has anything NOT gone up in price in 4 1/2 years?
market volatility, cost of crude components, cost of labor, etc etc etc.
I find it amazing that an adult cannot comprehend these core realities of life.

A year ago lead was about 80 cents a pound, now it is about $1.20.
So a 50% increase in materials cost just in the last year.

Add the additional cost of transportation due to high diesel prices.

There may also be additional environmental regulations causing an increase in price.

Was in Wally's to get some PP ($24.79...ouch) and noticed the same Chinese window A/C units I bought 2-3 years ago for $89 were now $195. In all fairness, the ones I bought may have been at the end of the season and so were marked down, but that's still a big difference.

The cost has gone up, but the good news..... in our area...

Walmart has switched suppliers from Exide, back to Johnson Controls!!

No more outgassing, terminal corroding, self discharging, short lived Exides!! At least, Walmart batteries are now worth more!

If you aren't aware of what the government and its sponsers are doing ,,,they are printing paper money "fiat" and the more printed money there is the less the printed money is worth . Hence the price of everything is increasing. That price rise is called inflation. Hope and change for the people I would guess.

JC may be an improvement over Exide, but they're not great - just look at what they did to the Optima name..

man o man cost of must/all things is much higher. i live in an apartment and could not jump my truck if it didnt start. so my view of battery cost is a litte different than yours. i am going to replace my battery every two years, and replace the starter every 4 years. i think this will go a long way to keeping my truck starting.

$99 here, a few days back.

Buy your next battery from advance, with coupon, to get close to your last price. Theirs are made by JC as well.

About the only thing that ever goes down in price is finished electronic goods.

If money had to be physically backed by something, rather simply printed, this would not be nearly as likely to happen.
