427Z06 - a link for synlube, looking under descripiton of Synthetic PAO. It says that without additives can cause more wear than a Conventionl Petro product.

Disregard anything that quack says.

The non-Newtonian properties, pressure-viscosity coefficients, bulk moduli and boundary film-strength properties of basestocks vary but need to be put into context of the formulation and the lubrication/temperature regime they will be operating in.

427Z06 - Cool! Thanks!

I keep learning, as I go.

Hard to statistically believe two quarts of 5W-20 with three quarts 0W-40 can't handle -20 temps?

Isn't that the formula you were going to use?

If anything, I would very-slowly loosen the oil pan bolt - let another quart drip out - then replace it with a quart of 5W-20 --- before I would drain all the oil & replace it.

Then I would save that quart of used oil for next oil change.

HEY, CANADA GUYS!!!

I am in ohio. If I cleaned out a walmart of Mobil 1 0W-20, and brought it across the border, would you guys make it worth while?

Statististics have very little to do with it. You're dealing with a blend of unknown formulations. It's hard to predict how various basestocks, VIIs, and PPDs are going to behave when mixed. That's why I don't normally recommend blending for the low end. Best case scenario is if an all PAO 0w20 was being blended in...but it looks like we can't count on that anymore.

Well.....I would have bet it would have been good........but this AM, evidently it turns out not to be the case.

IF I remeber right XD-3 0W40 is on the thick side for a 0W40. Would M1 0W40 be thin enough to make life bearable? Is M1 0W30 available? I know that M1 0W30 is some seriously thin stuff!

Actually, if they'd bump the HTHS up to about 3.3, and keep the SL/GF-3 CCS/MRV values, it would be the most perfect 30 grade for all around use. Besides, no oil is too thin at -20°C.

If you cannot find a 0w-20 synthetic, I would go for a 0w30 rather than a 5w-20 for very cold climates (Minnesota, N Dakota or much of Canada and Alaska. Otherwise the 5w-20 may be ok.
