I have a post in the oil additive section about some blow-by issues I am having. I recently ran across this ( http://www.valvoline.com/faqs/motor-oil/full-synthetic-motor-oil/ ) which says, somewhere in there, That if blow-by exists synthetic can make it worse.

Because of this and the fact that I change oil often and I know synthetic is not necessary I am thinking about switching to a Conventional high mileage oil (I currently use M1 10w30 high mileage)

Does anyone have any recommendations. I also thought about a synthetic blend like Valvoline Max Life but that kind of defeats the purpose of switching because synthetic might possible make blow-by worse. Also the recommended oil is 5w30 and I would appreciate any recommendations on if I should use a different viscosity.

If you have anymore questions about the blow-by, or the car, or stuff i have already tried please see my recent post under "oil additives". The post is called "Blow-by and additive questions w/ details" or https://bobistheoilguy.com/forums/threads/blow-by-and-additive-questions-w-details.120152/ (I go into a lot of details there and if there is some info that might help it is probably there)

Thanks for any advice.

Also, I mentioned this in my other post but thought I should here too. The car (1999 suzuki esteem 1.6l) is typically driven short trips, about (10) 1-5 mile trips a day. About one 30 mile trip a week and (1-2) 300 mile trips a month. I am not sure if this qualifies for severe duty or not.

If your engine does not call for snythetic and you are not lookiing for extended OCI's, I agree with using dino oil. Me personally, I dont really put too much stock into "high mileage" oils. As far as dino oil goes, I like plain ole Pennzoil and valvoline. Even if I do not feel the need to run synthetic oil, I still run a blend in the winter.

Are you saying that the esters in HM oils mean that they don't qualify for a true conventional oil. You suggested I try a 10w-40 conventional. I am assuming you are suggesting to not use a HM oil. Is this correct.

Thanks

I beleive that most of the High Mileage Oils are a syn/blend. For example, Valvoline MaxLife says so on the bottle/jug. Im kind of supprised that others here aren't recomending HM oils. But, since your post suggests "conventional oil" then I guess this is what others are suggesting! I would have recomended MaxLife 5/10W30 for starters. They're a bit thicker than the typical 5/10W30 conventional oils and there is only a bit of syn oil mixed in. Not enough to contribute to blow by.

I pretty much have my mind made up that I will be using a high mileage oil. I have had good luck with them in the past, albeit they were full synthetic, and after comparing multiple product data sheets I can see that HM oils are thicker (5w30 GTX HM is slightly thicker that 5w30 GTX) than there non HM versions. I was considering MaxLife and I am glad to hear that the synthetic content is minimal, since conventional is what I am going for.

The conventional, or blend (MaxLife), oils that I have been considering are:
- Castrol GTX HM (never used a castrol product before)
- Valvoline MaxLife

If anyone has any input on the others, or those mentioned, I would like to here it.

Just a suggestion which may or may not work well for you: I get my oil changed at Firestone, basically for not much more than the cost of the oil, filter, and min wage labor; they put in some excellent synth blend; if you're worried about it being too thin (I do, in the summer) you can ask them to fill it with just 3 quarts (or whatever amount would leave room for an extra quart), and then add some dino diesel 15w40 oil which also have better additive packages. (If that's not thick enough you can try 20w50).

Thanks for all the info!!!

I still plan to switch to DINO or blend next change but I think I am more confused now than before. I know I will be fine with whatever I decide so its not that big of a deal but I still want whats best. I dont know if there is certain Additives that I should be focusing on moly, etc.... Should I be concerned if an oil is lacking an additive that another product has a good dose of. I'm just not sure.

But thanks for all the help so far. I may be confused but I certainly understand the basics of oil better than I used to, which was not at all.
