I stopped by Walmart today to pick up oil and filter for my dads 2002 Suburban and I was looking at the PF46 and opened it up like always and it looked completely different on the inside. Instead of the solid looking steel I saw a flat piece that looked stuck in there. Also there was a PF46E I think and it didn't look right either. I used the little computer thing and now it says to use the PF61? What's going on and what filter do I use? It's a 5.3L in the Suburban.

So the PF46 is the correct one that I have always used in the past right? Why does it look so different inside the filter? I was just reading through another thread and someone mentioned that the PF61 actually has different threads than the PF46? ohhhh, too many choices

And what's an e-core?

If I were to use the PF61, would I have to put more than my usual 6 quarts in or it shouldn't differ by that much?

The thing that gets me is that when I was in the store the PF46 and the PF46E (which I assume is the one with the funny looking flat steel plate) looked the same. I can only assume it was in the wrong box or something. I'll go back tomorrow and take a look.

Only thing I can think of is you misread something?

The PF46 and PF61 both use a 13/16-16 thread. They are identical dimension wise except the PF61 is longer. Family members have vehicles that use these filters. When we can't find the PF61's we use the PF46.

I went to Walmart and opened literally every box of the PF46 (and PF46E) and PF61 (and PF61E). Every single one was the ecore regardless of the E at the end or not. It seems like they used up the old boxes and stickers on the filters themselves for the e-cores and have completely phased out the old ones. So I ended up buying two PF61s (one was an E. I figured I would get each one in case no one believed me then i could take pictures as proof) :P

Also, what is the general consensus on the e-cores? Are they just as durable as the classics? The Suburban gets an oil change about every 3 months (when the OLM calls for it) but my sisters Tahoe with the same engine can go about 6 months or maybe more before it gets an oil change.

Those who use them, like them. Those who don't like them, well ..they really don't like them.

I find the design clever. I have no reservations about using them.

That said, they were a neat little nugget to carry out of Wally's for $2.02 back in the day. Now at $2.65 (or whatever) the Motor Craft next door to it for $3.55 (or whatever) is more appealing ..as is the $2.29 ProSelect from NAPA.
