ovens and more!

Turn down service is only 2 slugs at the wonderful state correctional facility.

I wish I was kidding.

I called a buddy of mine who still works at the prison I left several years ago tonight just to catch up. After talking about our kids and other things, I asked him how things were going at work and if they had improved any since they terminated the previous warden. Apparently they have changed for the better... but not the better of the operations/security of the institution, nor for the better of society. But boy are the inmates ever pleased.

I left because I could see the place was on a downward spiral with its sights set firmly embracing a "hug-a-thug" mentality. I never could have imagined the depths to which a facility designed for the express purpose of housing violent felons could sink.

When I left there were 4 "privledge levels" for the inmates with the highest level granting inmates access to the honor unit housing. They have since added two more levels and more "perks" to go with them. Now inmates of PL5 and above who feel the need to feed their sweet tooth can make their own milkshakes right on the honor unit with the wonderful commercial grade machine the prison purchased. In need of a late night snack, they need to look no further than the deep freeze and pizza ovens.

Yes they have to pay for these amenities, but its a prison not a daycamp for spoiled children.

They've brought back free weights which are banned in most prisons because: A) they make great weapons and B) help them bulk up even more than resistance training machines to build bigger and better criminals.

There's a laundry list of other things (mostly security related) that have changed for the worse but I won't bother going into detail here since outside of the two other current COs on the forums it would require too much explanation as to what the changes are and why they are a terrible idea.

My buddy told me that there is even talk of the facility looking into the logistics of running a DVD rental service for the inmates.

Some prison aren't an austere and unpleasant place to do time? I'm sure the experts running the prison system and the warden know what they're doing. To think otherwise is just too much tinfoil

As a tax payer, I'm not sure I want to be buying more than the basics for inmates. I think in our society, we should be thinking about crime victims rights and safety of citizens, not buying convicted criminals health club memberships.

I was considering for a while (considering is perhaps too strong a word) to apply for a job as a prison guard near the FIL farm. I don't think I could deal with inmates. My hat off to you sir.

That's okay, in my county the overnight shift guards left doors unlocked because it was "easier". Two prison love birds (man+woman in different wings) jammed their cell door latches with paper or something and snuck out in the middle of the night for some whoopie.

No offense, but if you think those in charge are providing perks to inmates just to be nice... well, they're not. Anyone with a basic understanding of people management realizes that motivating with reward is much more effective than using fear/punishment/etc. If it makes the prison run more smoothly by letting the inmates buy pizza and milkshakes, who is losing?

Also, wouldn't one suppose that training the inmates that being good equals a better life might be a good way to prepare them to be productive once released? I'm not delusional enough to think you're going to reform everyone, but if it works for a few, great. Depriving them of everything possible out of spite, without an end goal in mind doesn't make much sense.

Mean spirited folks here. You all should be ashamed of yourselves, wanting to PUNISH those poor criminals.

Like Pablo said, who needs our money? Why inmates of course.

no matter what they (the govt) does isn't and never has worked. the US should be ashamed at the prison to population ratio in this country, along w/ the amount of violent crime compared to other so-called 'civilized' societies.

Giving our criminals the same food we serve in the school cafeterias - How Draconian!!! What are we trying to do, poison them?

On a more serious note - they would probably be more emotionally stable with less sugar, carbs and fat, but I'm sure when your other liberties are taken away the urge to self-medicate in the ways you are still allowed is particularly strong.

They already had very good "perks" at PL3 and PL4 before they upped the ante.

Managing inmates isn't like managing employees or children. In the end what is going on always results in a worse run prison. This kind of treatment goes hand in hand with laxity in proper security protocols. Before I left, the old warden had started cooking the books on offender misconduct instructing the administrative law judge to toss out a large number of the major reports written and to remand a larger number of them back to the unit managers as minor reports. This resulted in a (not inaccurate) mentality among the inmates of "I can get away with a lot before facing any consequences." When that happens, you'll start to see an uptick in violence and unrest.

We would find weapons on occasion under the more stern management style of the first warden I served under. When his predecessor took over, within 6 months of him putting his warm and fuzzies policies in place we saw an increase in the number of weapons found. We saw a huge rise in violence and theft related to debts (gambling or otherwise) since the facility was no longer cracking down on that sort of thing.

It doesn't register with a lot of them and its born out in the psych profiles and custody/risk assessment instruments. Poor impulse control, little ability to plan for the future, poor ability to estimate risk/associated consequences and the chance of getting caught before engaging in their actions.

Not spite. Quite frankly a lot of it comes down to the security implications.

What's the matter with you guys, after all the "experts" know what's best for serious felons (murderers, rapists, molestors, ect)
you doubters are nothing but tin foil hats.

If it were up to me NO cold blooded murderer should EVER be released from prison, ever.

I like the way Sheriff Arpaio handles prisoners.

Pink panties, tents in hot weather, manual labor, and [censored] food. What? Don't like this? Stop your criminal behavior!

I like Joe Arpaio's method to incarceration: baloney sandwiches and tents.

Although I do agree that the level of incarceration for simple drug offenses is just stupid. But, what are you going to do when more and more of the prison system is becoming privatized...
