so this morning when i was leaving for work i was heading to my car to leave and my mom was warming up her car for work also. i remote started my car and she had to go start hers. when i was going to the my car i could hear a slight ticking sound every few seconds from her car. im running PP OW20 and a fram XG in her car. it was 2*F this morning. car has the 2.5 I4 motor with 94k on it. i put full syn in it for a reason.

FWIW, my 2.3 Duratech (the longitudinal version) has a good amount of piston slap/tick on very cold mornings (like < 10F)

Does it sound like from the lower end?

Sounds like a lifter tick from the top.

I'd just chalk it up to the frigid temps and not worry unless it happens all the time. How's the oil level?

It's no big deal, don't worry. These Duratec engines are NOISY as far as "ticking" noises go. Doesn't matter if it's 4 cylinders or 6, they all seem to be noisy. Especially in the cold. There's nothing wrong.

Agreed. The same motor in our Fusion has never been quiet. It's amazing the sound difference between my Sedona and Fusion... the Sedona is barely audible once it warms up. The Fusion is noisy at any temperature. Both have been dead reliable and burn no oil, so I don't worry about it. I used to have a Focus with the very closely related 2.0L Duratec and it, too, was noisy.

i like the motor. But i guess it just has a lil noise when it cold out.

V6 Duratecs aren't as noisy as the 4cyl but they're all still noisy. Lol My V6s are loud on cold starts but they quiet down a lot when they're warm. The 4cyl engines make all kinds of noise regardless.

My family and I had a bunch of Ford cars for the past 30 years and I don't know why, but almost all of these cars had noisy engines when heard from the outside, and the noises were almost always from the lifters.

But despite this, we never had any faulty engine.

My sister's 2004 Focus with the 2.3L and 125000 miles, and my wife's 2009 Fusion with the 2.3L and 74000 miles both are noisy, more so when cold. Both have regular maintenance and so far have been running like champs. ::knocks on wood::

My 06 V6 fusion also starts out with a tick. It has always had "metal" in the pan after an oil change. It now has 160,000 miles and still runs strong. I never thought it would make it to 100,000.

My 1996 Contour 2.0L Zetec makes varying noises when first running and driving, depending how cold it is outside. When it warms up slightly it gets quieter. It sounds like an exhaust leak that closes as it warms up. The car is 20 years old with 107,000 miles, I can't complain because it's almost quiet once it warms up. My last UOA showed low to normal metal wear in an 8,800 OCI.

I had a 96 Contour that was clacky on start and lasted for several seconds. I sold it at 104 K to a friend and he sold it when it had 300K. The engine was always noisy but performed very well for a long time.

I have a 2010 Fusion with the 2.5 engine, with 210,000 miles. The engine is definitely a bit noisy at times, and there is an odd kind of 'tick' sound, but I think it's most likely the fuel injectors.

My 2003 sable with the duratec 3.0 sounded similar.

Whatever it is, it doesn't seem to be detrimental to the engine. My last UOA with over 7,500 miles on the oil, showed extremely low wear metals.
