Happy Sunday folks

I vividly recall the Buffalo Sabres goalie Clint Malarchuk and his near death experience on the ice. Upon reading about the man, he has had some struggles but is still alive and doing ok it seems. Anyone recall this man when he played hockey?

I'm obviously not going to post that video as its kinda gruesome.

I remember him well. I have his autograph (along with the rest of the Sabres team that was playing at the time) stashed away somewhere. Was a nice guy, but definitely fell into lots of problems after the incident. March 22 1989... been a long time already...

Yeah, heard he had ocd as child and depression and tried to kill himself. Glad he's still with us and is a speaker to young folks and people in general

This old goalie remembers him well. Malarchuk's experience made me very careful to never play without my Crouch (Kevlar) collar, and my son, who later played goal, always wore his as well.

He has written an autobiography which I should read.

I think of him whenever I donate blood.

About ten years ago there was another goalie who had his neck slit at a game in Buffalo.

Can't remember the name, but the buffalo medical staff saved his life.

I do remember his accident. I didn't watch the game specifically, but at that time, I was following hockey much more closely than I was now.

Weren't we all? I know this makes me sound old, but think there are too many teams now, the schedule's too long, there's too much obstruction, and the goaltenders' equipment is too big. Also, the league should require that all new rinks are olympic size - 215' x 85' I think. That would speed the game up quite a bit.

It wasn't a goalie that time. It was Richard Zednik (a forward). I remember it was a freak accident and he got sliced by one of his teammates. I believe it was Jokinen but not 100% on that.

Yeah, I'm lucky I have strong and good veins. And I have A+ blood which is ideal for plasma and or platelets.

I remember the incident in question. Definitely not an injury you want to have on the ice. Glad Clint is still going. He's lucky to be alive.

Those are all issues, too, but, as in my other threads on TV audiences, it was a pretty easy decision to watch hockey when you had only like two channels available in rural Saskatchewan.

HNIC was shown on Wednesday evenings for awhile ... I used to watch Wednesday and Saturday, and usually listen to the Sunday afternoon game on CBC radio as well. Now I hardly pay attention until the playoffs.
