Saw one AVE video where the $16 Taiwan-made breaker bar was as good as the $150 American breaker bars. No wonder the American tool makers are toast.

I still break a US Craftsman socket now and then, when I have the chance to use the odd sizes that haven't already been broken and replaced by another brand. Well that's 12 points. The 6 point 3/8 Metric I moved the whole set to SK long ago, had to. Same with US Metric Cman wrenches, all the commonly used open ends were sprung and I moved to SK.

Most of my remaining Cman is SAE, including the BF Japan Craftsman wrenches, US 1/2" sockets, etc. Hardly use SAE any more, so they may live forever.

BF are okay but the ones you really want a "K" marked wrenches. BF was a little early for top shelf Japanese tools.

BF = probably Daido, possibly Hozan, Japanese made, ca 1969 - 1987

K = SK division of Facom, ca. 1985 - 2004, could still be NOS

Trav - several months ago you posted a VERY exhaustive listing of Craftsman tools with ID's and corresponding dates going back many decades. For example, many of mine are "V", "VV", VVN", etc. How you got all this info is beyond belief, like you penetrated the vaults of Sears, etc. This forum is not big on "Stickys" but if there was ever a need for one this is it. This is an invaluable source of info for all. I assume you still have this file and could post it again? This time I will remember to print it. Kind Regards

Danaher bought Armstrong and several others over the years. Corporate buying and selling mixes names up. I always thought the later USA Craftsman were made by Armstrong, same look. I look for Armstrong sometimes on ebay if it's new. In a few years it will be all gone. Danaher sold Apex to Bain Capital in 2012. Armstrong is gone, all has been outsourced to make more profit.

Allen tools (the reason inside hex tools are known as Allen wrenches) went out with Armstrong so Apex could concentrate more on Gearwrench, higher profits.
I can see Wright going out at some point, they seem unwilling to make a large metric assortment or a modern style pear head ratchet, they are old school, heavily vested in 40 year old and older service requirements (SAE) and do not offer much I would be interested in USA made high quality or not.
 
never even thought the codes meant anything important. Just looked at mine. My sockets are G and wrenches are a mix of V and VV.
 
The codes mean everything. Craftsman had so top tier manufacturers make tools for them, I have a set of pro "k" stamped wrenches that are really nice, they were made by SK. The "V" tools are very desirable.
When I used to hit the flea markets I would take the list with me, it helped me to weed out the rubbish and find the gold. I don't go much anymore, I always come home with something cool but I have way too many tools already.

Every code in manufacturing has a meaning or they won't put it on ($ wasted). They just don't publicize it.
 
When craftsman went china, I pretty much stopped purchasing them, you can get the same china crap at harbor freight for cheaper.
 
I just bought a few things from Sears which were Made In USA. Not every Craftsman piece is Made In China.

I honestly don't care. As long as they continue to offer the lifetime warranty, I'll buy it. I've never broken anything. Just lose things. Which means that I should really buy from Harbor Freight.

How so?

They aren't the smoothest ratchet out there, but I've never needed a replacement.
