My friend has a 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4x4 with the 4.0l straight six motor,i would like to run 15w40 chevron delo 400 motor oil in the summertime,as the engine is a little tired, but it doesn't burn any oil,has good cold & hot oil pressure, the valves just make a little noise,i would like to run a heavy duty oil in the summer, because they drive to maine in the woods a few times a year, and she drives it back & forth to work everyday except mom,wed & fri,i run 3000 mile oci's,with a stp s16 oil filter, which i am going to change to a oversize motorcraft fl1a oil filter, for a little extra oil capacity. I am going to run chevron supreme 10w30 motor oil in the wintertime or Napa Premium 10w30 oil (made by valvoline),in the wintertime with 3k oci's. I will be adding approx 2 oz of valvoline synpower oil additive with the oil change,as it will hold approximatley 6 quarts of oil with the oversize oil filter. I appreciate all comments, sorry for being so long winded. Thank you very much

If your 4.0 feels a bit tired, I recommend an AutoRX treatment(or two), and some Fuel Power in the gas tank. My 96 non-Grand Cherokee has 103,000 on it and runs like it was brand new.
It currently has Chevron High Mileage 10W30 in it, but I did run Delo 15W40 for one OCI and it was fine...this was in autumn near Seattle-which really doesn't mean much, now that I think about it....

to markc and others in reply,it doesn't feel tired powerwise,it just feels a little loose,it is clean as a whistle inside, the lady has religiously changed the oil every 3k on the button,it's clean underneath the valvecover, oil pressure builds rapidly,it's just a little loose from alotta highway miles. I'm curious if a diet of 15w40 chevron delo 400 for the summer, and chevron supreme 10w30 for the winter would be fit for this motor, she would like half a million trouble free miles outta it. Ty much

I have been running our 93 Jeep GC 4.0 on 15w40 HDEO (dino) for some time now and it has worked well. This fine machine has about 180,000 on it now and never had anything under the hood touched except for replacing valve cover gasket this summer. Seems to be a tick quieter. I switched to Rotella T 5w-40 for winter. I have read a lot about these engines liking a 40 wt oil. This last oil change I three 2 qts of 5w-50 Castrol syntec in just for fun to see if it would slow some of the oil loss we have been experiencing, partially from rear main leakage and perhaps a bit of consumption as well. If it makes the motor blow up it isn't that big of a deal to me, she needs to be retired anyways.

I run Schaeffer Synthetic Blend 15w40 in my 4.0 @ 2.5L's during the summer. It will work great. My best UOA's with these motors have been with a 15w40 oil.

I'm no expert, but that plan seems to be a good one.

A HDEO with its high TBN and Aggressive Additive Pack doesnt need 3000 mi changes.

Unless you are concerned about water from offroading? And then it should be changed as soon as possible after being submerged.

Also if you see temps below 0&#176F in the winter you might consider a 5w30. Otherwise 10w30 is the best choice for winter oil.

she does not off-road with this vehicle at all,she drives it to/from work, she dislikes the annoying oil change reminder, and i suppose i could put a new oil filter on at the 3k mark
and go with 6k oci's,and reset the oil change reminder, and she cannot afford a oil analysis, but i'd say the motor is wearing well, when i had a look the camshaft looked like brand new, mind you no major engine work except a water pump has been done, and a radiator flush,i would like to find delo 400 10w30 hdeo to run year round, but it is rather difficult to find in my area,i was considering shell rotella straight 10w motor oil year round, because it's a hdeo with what looks to be a robust additive pack and whatnot,ty very much for all your advice,it is appreciated, cheers to all

I think you meant Shell Rotella T 10w30?

If it is readily available to you it is a good choice.

At operating temperature it is on the thick end for a 30 weight. Almost a 40 weight. It is a good viscosity for the 4.0L Jeep.

With the 10W rating it should be good down to 0&#176F even if heavily loaded with soot (Diesel). An occasional subzero start (-15&#176F) should be doable on a gasoline engine. You might consider doing time based OCI and making sure it has fresh oil in the winter. As long as you are changing oil every 6 months I see no reason for a filter change in between OCI.

As matter of fact my mothers Buick 3800 does yearly 6,000 mi changes on HDEO with cheap SuperTech Filters with no filter change in between and insolubles around 0.3%.

I totally agree with you about how HDEO arent worn out after 3000 miles, but in my case i change it because i get worried about fuel dilution. i have a lot of extended idle periods and i dont plan on going past 4000 mile oci without an oil anaylisis.

really like the new delo. have never used but have used rotella dino and like it. cant decide what to use next change. switching from schaeffers to something cheaper.

delo vs. rotella dino: what has better cold weather specs? i am curious because i am right on the verge of using a 10w30 instead of 15w40 according to my owners manual and the current weather. i would much rather stick with the 15w40.

I stretch my Delo or Delvac Super to 6500km or six months, whichever comes first. I also have started my vehicles under -10c weather without any problems, these vehicles were parked outside, one for a week, other for more than two weeks, I have done this procedure with Delo and Delvac Super.

That is a low sulfated ash, low TBN oil designed primarily for winter oil for 2-Stroke Diesels.

I dont believe a 10 Weight oil would be an desirable in a 4.0L Jeep.

I ran Delo 15w40 in my 93 Cherokee 4.0 til I sold it at 85,000 miles or so. Current owner still uses it.

NO! That is for OLD diesel engines in Yukon winters. Not for your gasoline engine in temperate climates. It has a weak additive package with CF/SJ rating.
