The torque converter alone is in the neighborhood of $200. The remaining parts (to do it right), fluid and filter are $200 minimum, assuming no broken hard parts. You can get a transmission repaired for what you are talking, but that isn't a rebuild.

Rebuild on a 4L60E in a 1995 Caprice wagon, parts and labor. That was a good price, some places wanted more.

a buddy of mine did a junkyard swap from a low miles donor S10 about 5 years ago and hasn't had any problems. I think changing fluid more often is they key. I;m just one of those people who have "good luck" with the vehicles I own and care for.
