Had the wife go and get some ice cream yesterday. I told her before hand not to get the low fat stuff. She got some regular Breyers on sale.

Man what a joke!

No flavor and they whip so much air into it that it about melts the minute it hits your mouth.

What do you guys think?

Who makes the best ice cream out there?

My local family-owned ice cream shop tastes the best to me. Probably enough milk and cream in there to clog an elephant's arteries in one helping, but yummmmmmm... :)

I am an ice cream nut. I am mad at how bad the regular ice cream is! Full of gummy thickeners (VII?) and whipped to a fare-thee- well. I will say, for locally available, that Hagen Daz has the best texture - thick, it cleaves or snaps apart when spooning it out (into my mouth). Chocolate - I Feel it could have a more intense chocolate flavour - its more of a weak milk chocolate/malt flavor. Turkey Hill just came out with a Philly style all natural line thats just Milk , cream, sugar, eggs and flavouring. They sell a short half gal here for $2.50. Great deal! Was really dense at first, but then they started whipping it a bit to much. Starbucks isnt too bad - I like the coffe flavor. I Recall in the late 70's and 80's that Frusen Gladje' in the plastic containers was better than HagenDas (all these are fake made up "euro suave" product names; Kraft bousgt Fruzen Gladje and killed it - surprise, surprise!). Have anything good around there? I live too far now from the local farm ice cream stand that had the best grape nut and also maple walnut.

Here is a general rule that applies to pretty much any food product: the less ingredients and the less unpronounceable names on the side panel, the better it usually tastes and the less harmful it is to you. (Though keep in mind ice cream isn't exactly health food).

The best ice cream I've had is the store-brand stuff that Whole Foods sells. Its just milk + sugar + cocoa (or vanilla, depending on what I buy).

Ice cream is fine - your genetics can handle it. They cant handle MArgerine and GMO corn oil - the biggest heart disease bringers of the 20th century - garbage courtesy of the big 5 Illegal Food Monopolies.

Tillamook ice cream rocks, not sure if it's available anywhere but in the West. We visited the factory/plant in Oregon a few years ago, you can have as many ice cream samples as you want:) They also make great cheese.

Their "Chocolate with Peanut Butter" is to die for~

I agree with jcwit, Hudsonville ice cream is very good. I just bought some Breyer's regular vanilla ice cream and I haven't tried it yet. I'll have to have some today and let you know what I think.

ZZman, Sherman's ice cream is the best. They're located in South Haven and will sell to stores around the SW Mi, NW IN area. Oink's in New Buffalo, Mi uses Sherman's products. Peanut Butter mix (can't remember the exact name) is the best.

Geez, there are a ton of rant threads all over this board! That's my rant!

I had some breyer's melt slightly and refreeze. The texture was VERY wierd and I had to toss it.

For now it's Edy's Vanilla bean, not french, not 1/2 fat, or any other varieties for me.

Friendly's has a "forbidden chocolate" that is also edible. Leaves a cocoa ring on the bowl when done.

Friendly's vanilla and Edy's chocolate are IMO so-so or worse and not worth it.

Yeah, but everyone is different and I haven't been able to tolerate ice cream in decades. :)

I'm a blood type O+ non secretor. My type, the protein type, does good on animal proteins and saturated fat, but generally not sweet sugary foods such as ice cream.

Also, a lot of ice cream is not sold as 1/2 gallons anymore. They are somewhat less , and cost more.
Kinda like candy bars that are 'fun sized' down to a ridiculous level.

Hmm never thought about that. I'm a O+ also but I've never had a problem with ice cream or cheese. But with milk if I drink it any other time than at a night big lactose intolerance problem. Ehh everything's bad for you might as well live while your here! (within limits of course)
