I have a 2010 ford transit connect with 140k I am thinking about changing the filter every other change like honda recommends. I have taken good care from the get go so i know the engine is clean.

I usually run 5k on tropartic or motorcraft. sometimes 7k on PP. max mileage for a filter would be 12k.

any thoughts?

I do that with my Astro - run a Bosch Distance Plus that I got cheap, run for 2 oil changes. I also a BD+ in my Sienna, but I do change that one at each change. Both vehicles see once per year oil changes.

So, how will you do it?

Just leave it on... old oil and all? Or take it off, dump the old oil out, and then put it back on?

i would probably leave it on. I use the bosch premium filter with filtech media. I figure the little bit of leftover oil in the filter will not really affect the oci.

i run alot of miles in this van. i change the oil once a month when using tropartic on 5k runs. Once i get going in the morning, the engine stays hot pretty much all day.

Highway miles? If so you could probably go 7500, unless warranty dictates different. Even my 93 olds was 7500 for non severe service. You could do it one time and pull a uoa to confirm.

highway and stop and go city. lots of stops along the way where im turning the engine off and on. warranty is long gone at 140k.

I would use a synthetic media filter for two oci's. Without removing the filter at the first change. Just use the same oil to prevent additives from colliding.

You have two options:

Purchase quality $3 filters, such as Motorcraft or Puro Classic, and change every OCI. Or you purchase a higher end filter such as Fram Ultra or PureOne and go every two changes.

Personally, I like swapping everything during every oil change, as it is what is recommended. From a cost-benefit perspective, it is difficult to rationalize any monetary savings as I use a $3.50 Motorcraft filter every change. Time is trivial, as it only takes a matter of seconds to take off the filter.

If no warranty concerns, a bosch distance plus or mobil one filter and synthetic oil for 10k runs.

Better oil, better filter, replace both at 10k-12k miles, backed up by UOA. With the miles you're racking up, a UOA would be a great idea.

I just changed the oil only (Mobil Super 5w30) on my Altima V6 ... I'm using a FRAM Ultra which will get two 6K OCIs. First time I've used one filter for two OCIs on this car. Should be completely fine since engine is super clean and the Ultra is rated at 15K.

better oil and filter cost approx $35 plus tax assuming $25 for 5qt of oil and $10 for filter.

I get tropartic (same as motorcraft) on sale for $1.99 qt. I buy filters in bulk for 4 vehicles from rockauto which brings shipping down to almost nothing per filter. If i do the filter every other oci, that brings the cost down to $11 for a good oil change.

I know the filters are cheap but.... if the money can be saved, why not? if honda can recommend every other oci which is approx 10-12k, I know the engine in that van is every bit as clean as any honda because i do the maintenance and i think the bosch filters with filtech media are pretty close to the same as the honda filters. Seems like it would be ok unless im missing something.

Buy a M1 filter or applicable fram and run to 15K.

I use my M1 for (2) or (3) OCI. No real worries about the 5oz of oil that is not drained. Last time I checked it was properly lubricating the engine prior to shutting the engine off.
