I ran into a guy at work that told me that in his cars, he went to the store and bought the cheapest oil and filter he could find, no matter what the brand, name brand, Super Tech whatever, and that he changed his oil every 6-7K miles and so far had no problems whatsoever. He has over 200K miles on his Mazda and close to 100K on a Scion, and I can't remember the other vehicles he told me about having way, way over 100K all lubed in this manner. He said he'd used every house brand oil I could name, even some I'd never known existed, and no problems.

Now I'm just a tad too OCD to go that route, but it got me wondering if the data from this site shows any problem with buying whatever name brand oil is on sale and using it. In other words, Valvoline dino one oil change, then Pennzoil the next, then GTX, etc. If you stuck with the major brands, would it make any difference? Does the UOA data show any signs of this kind of scheme?

I go with the cheapest name brand conventional or HM oil at the time I need to stock up and have stuck to a 5K/6 month regime. I'll go even longer if by 6 months I only have like 2,000 miles.

I've used every brand of oil, had four different brands in my motor at the same time. Never an issue. 215,000 miles on one vehicle I service doing the same.

On the contrary, the data shows that almost no matter what you do, any decent modern oil will work well: straight, mixed, or any other way you want to run it, regardless of what you ran before and what you will run next.

I believe every word he says too. using different brands of oil at every change seems kinda tacky, but if you go by price when you buy, you will end up with different brands of oil at every change due to oil sales at the time.

Those engines last because you DO the oil changes. Even if it's the cheapest, or a blend of four different etc., you DO the changes regularly. A true testimony to the value of sticking to a reasonable plan.

I've used multiple brands in various cars i've owned with no problems. I tend to be more picky about my filter choice than my oil choice.

6000-7000 would be a bit long for me on dino, but i see no reason why you could not use any brand you wanted to without fear of doing any harm regardless of the previous brand used.

SL/SM oils are created to meet a certain performance characteristic. Some exceed it far more than others, but they all meet at least certain levels, albeit getting there in different ways.

What happened to RayH ?

Yep.

If you don't drive a turbo/supercharged/performance/diesel vehicle then just stick with what your owners manual recommends.

Right now I'm stocking up on whatever is on sale. Right now its Shell for $1 per quart.

I'm coming around to the ~single~ belief that nice and evenly spaced oil changes are the key. That is, if you have a certian budget and plan, space it out evenly, not randomly, and that's basicly all you need to do.

I don't see any harm to changing to different oil brands, but 6-7,000 miles seems high for a dino. Sure, it CAN be acceptable, but that's too much for me.

if you do mostly highway miles i would think 6-7K would be ok for dino, uoa of course to confirm every thing is ship shape.

Heck, I change oil brands within the OCI. With as much oil as my cars go through, I usually grab whatever appeals to me or catches my eye. So far, on this OCI (my first one since getting it) I've use Maxlife syn-blend, Maxlife full syn, GC, 1 or 2 quarts of cheap 15w40, one quart of 20w50, One bottle of Lucas oil sabilizer plus I think I put in some Bardahl B-2 in there somwhere.

Guess what I've been doing for over 30 years running what ever is on sale and using it will catch up to me soon.

Change the oil. Use oil. Follow the MFG requirements and 99.95% of the time everything will be all right.

Don't worry about this brand or that marketing. Its all garbage for most of us.
