Castrol Syntec

I started using Syntec 0W30 because it is still SL rated. It seems to quiet valvetrain noise better than any SM oil I've tried in my S2000.

I started using GC because of the hype it used to generate around here. GC replaced M1 0w40 in my VW. GC replaced unknown used-car-dealer-installed oil in my wife's Mercedes.

I would consider GC to be a completely different product that does not represent the rest of the Syntec oil line. GC may be better but is sure is different.

I currently have Syntec 5W30 in the engine. I'm using Syntec simply because Pennzoil Platinum did not go on sale when I needed it.

Syntec replaced dealership bulk dino (Petro-Canada 5W30).

I just purchased two jugs of 5W40 for my motorcycle. It was on sale at Can. Tire for $23. Too good of deal to pass up. My bike just purrs with this oil, it lasts the entire riding season and it goes on sale on a regular basis. I have to admit though that I mix a conventional oil with a litre of mobil 1 0W20 for my Honda Civic Hybrid.

I am using Syntec the same reason as BradC. I replaced XD-3 0W30. and will be using PP after i finished the rest of syntec...

by the way... i found nothing bad about syntec, acturally i feel it is smoother then mobil 1 and XD-3... don't ask me why, just the feeling

Castrol takes such a bashing here!

To say the very least it is SM rated so has to have a certain amount of lubrication moxie. Heck, it even has some decent UOA's.

Are there oils that are better? No doubt, but liking an oil is a personal thing.

You could run Castrol's lowliest oil and still get 200k out of an engine with 5k OCIs. I think any SM oil will do that. Cheers!

i'm running syntec 5w20 in the mustang right now...replaced Mobil 1...had some of it left in my cabinet from when it was on sale last year cheaper than PP

i will either go with this or PP in the mustang from here most likely

BMW Castrol and GC are two good oils. U.S. Syntec, IMO, has always been very overpriced and and just an average oil at best. None of their oils currently meet the HTO-06 spec and Syntec, I assume, was one of the brands that did poorly on Honda's own testing for deposit control in Turbo's. This also is shown by Mobil's TEOST test if you believe those numbers.

So I would be better off buying the "MINI MOTOR OIL" (BMW Castrol) at my dealer than getting Syntec at the local Wal-Mart? That's something I need to consider when the maintanence warranty expires soon.

Probably. Only two oils meet the Honda HTO-06 spec, PP and M1. All others failed it and I'm assuming Syntec was one of them. The spec was created by Honda to evaluate which oils held up best in a Turbo at preventing deposits.

In many cases an oil not on the list did not fail. It may not have even been tested. A BMW tech was ragging on some very good oils because they were not on some list. His complete knowledge of engine oil was also on that list.

I was just wondering why people were using Syntec. It's interesting that Castrol writes that Syntec is better than conventional oil but I have not seen the claim from them that Syntec is better than other synthetic oils. Users have not shown problem uoa's that I'm aware of.

I'm gonna take the MINI in for it's yearly oil change in a few weeks (barely put 10k on it in the last year) and I'm gonna ask the guys there about the oil and stuff. They sell both BMW and MINI branded oils in the parts/gifts shop, although I don't remember how much they were.

I'll post whatever I find out.

Come to think of it, I don't recall ANY synthetic oil claiming to kick another synthetic oils a$$ - they all claim only to be better than same weight conventional / synth blend oils.

Is there an unwritten cease fire amongst the oil producers that keeps them from doing this?

Of course, Amsoil is excepted because they tell and show all in their webpage! Just an observation, DV
