Hey guys, I haven't heard much about castrol edge on this forum. I just got a coupon in the mail from advance auto parts, 5qts of Castrol Edge, Puralator P1 filter for 24.99.

The car in question is a 95 lexus gs300 (2jzge) 186k , hwy/city mix driving. So far I have been doing dino oil changes,im on the 2nd oil change with MMO in crank. Also did 3 auto-rx phases.

Thanks!!

Good deal, good oil.

There are not alot of big fans of Edge because at the regular price it is not a good value. And there are not alot of UOA proving how good it is like PP. But it has not been out long, my guess in a year or so you will see those good UOA.

You might have high consumption for the 1st and 2nd oil change with Edge(as is the case with many oils) but after that you should be ok.

At Edge's regular price its not a good value compared to Mobil 1 EP, Pennzoil Platinum, or even Quaker State Ultimate Durability. I have noticed that BP's products have creeped up to a point where they are almost not worth it. I mean most of their Syntec line is more expensive than Mobil 1 and Mobil 1 EP.

I have run them all and my car likes the 20 dollar Quaker State best of the bunch.

Edge is a great oil value when on sale at advanced auto. Now that Walmart has raised the price of pennzoil platinum, I am probably switching over to edge for my corolla.

At $34 for the 5 qt. jug Edge didn't have many takers. At $19 for 5 qts. (that's about what you're paying with the P1 filter deal) it's a very good deal and I wouldn't hesitate to use it.

I am using it in my car currently. 1500miles of short trips and some longer. Used no oil so far, and if you really want to know

the engine sounds better than the mc 5w20 I had in last fill.

Hey again gs300tx, I'm on my 2nd consecutive fill of it in my Integra and I love it so far. It's slightly thinner than most 5w30's (except Havoline 5w30) which is what my car seems to prefer. It runs smooth, instant oil pressure in cold temps, and it's also slightly more quiet (could be placebo effect) than the Syntec Blend 5w30 I replaced two oil changes ago. I drove my car very hard during the last oil change, even in below freezing temps so I changed the fill out sooner than anticipated, at only 3,000 miles, and it came out looking as new and clear as the day I put it in. You could see through the stream while it was draining! I'm going to run it further this time, knowing it seems to hold up well to high RPMs and cold temps. I'll get it analyzed as well after this fill.

I'm thinking it will be a BITOG darling in 2010. I'm hoping for them to make it in a 0W20 or 5W20 grade soon.

It doesn't take much!!!

Castrol "Edge" would be a good oil for the guys that like to do once per year OCI's. Like my buddy that has a nice BMW the service advisor wouln't even touch the oil and filter unless it has a certain amount of miles on the odometer.

If I was the owner that means to me that a synthetic oil with a more robust additive package is in order. That means Castrol "Edge". I admit though it does have a higher price than compared to the standard synthetic oils. The stretched mileage you would get out of it would pay for the cost easy! My tow cents.

Durango

Ive noticed with the Castrol products, the auto parts store's prices are extremly high. My high mileage costs more than many other brands sythetics at AutoZone, costing over $28. At walmart though, they have it for $14.50, so much better of a deal.

I got mine on rebate.. paid 1.16$ for 5quarts and pure one filter. with AAP coupon

I would not use Castrol Products as the products have Arsenic, Cadmium, and Lead as ingredients, per the MSDS.

That may be why, after using just one oil change of Castrol Syntec Blend, or whatever the synthetic blends' name is, when I changed to a Full Synthetic Mobil 1 5w30 in my Nissan, and looked at my oil at 3k miles, that it was jet black. Now it may have been jet black because of using dino oils, like Pennzoil, Conoco, and Quaker State, however, at the same 3k interval, the Mobil 1 was Jet Black as opposed to Castrol which was a darker amber color.

Maybe Mobil 1 Synthetic was busy cleaning up the mess left by all the other oils, I don't know.

Right now, Quaker State Synthetic 5w30 is, also, Jet Black after 5k miles with a PureOne Oil Filter.

I will return to Mobil 1 at my next oci.

I think it'd be a good oil for high output engines, especially turbocharged engines where the turbos are oil cooled. It's not really worth spending the extra money on it for your average daily driver and mediocre 5k-7k OCI's. Just my opinion.

AAP has 5 quarts of GTX High Mileage with a Purolator PureONE filter for $20 til the end of the year.

Castrol offers an oil for high output and turbo apps, and it ain't Edge.
Edge seems too thin for any application that would seriously heat the oil.
OTOH, GC is made for such applications, and it carries a number of Euro long drain approvals, while US market Edge does not.
