Castrol 5w40. I found Edge(SM) mixed in with older Syntec (SJ) at Advance Auto. Does that mean the Edge has reduced Zinc and Phosohorus levels? This is for my Porsche Cayman with the suspect Intermediate Shaft design(IMS). Thanks, C.

I wouldn't touch that SJ stuff. Even though the Edge 5W-40 is SM rated. The Zinc and Phosohorus levels are not reduced like in 20 and 30 weights. I would recommend Mobil 1 0W-40 over the Castrol.

I know the M1 0w40 is recommended but there have been tests done (LN Engineering) that suggest higher Zn and P are necessary for these engines. I'm just trying to give my '07 2.7 Cayman a fighting chance since it's my DD and I pile on the miles. C.

if it's metallurgy related then it may not matter what oil you run.

I thought the whole "LN Engineering/Brad Penn is best" internet myth had been busted already?

If you have LN actually build you an engine with high-lift cams and flat tappets, then follow their recommendations because they've tested lubricants in that application.

For your unmodified Porsche, go with the recommendations of the folks who tested it the way the factory built it - the factory! Your car will be fine if you use any of the oils that Porsche recommends; you can happily disregard the internet fear-mongering.

The previous Syntec 5w40 should be SL (along with the several Euro specs that the oil is really about)

I'd run M1 0w-40 or even GC. Plenty of ZDDP in the M1 with it running about 1000ppm for both zinc and phosphorus. Better cold starts too for those frigid NY winter mornings.

Don't see the point of this oil. According to the lubrizol tool 229.5 is superior in almost ever way. This is why M1 0W-40 is such a fantastic oil. GC is 229.5 but not approved for AMG engines. Castrol 5W-40 can be used in AMG engines, but is not 229.5. M1 0W-40 is good enough to meet all specs regardless of mfr. No wonder Mercedes, Porsche and Nissan GT-R use it as factory and service fill.
